Is a WRX a wise choice for me at my age? (was: Want some advice please)
Here's a link to Jeff's car domain site. Another hot RS

Wow, that's a pretty sweet set-up that guy has. But I don't want to have to do a lot of work on the car (and I probably won't have the time with my school work). I want to drive it and not have any problems, and when I want to, be able to mod it and drive it the next day (no ongoing swaps/turbo projects for me).
Ahhh, padawan, learn you must. This car is completely capable, reliable, sporty. Once you get your feet wet, go for drive in the twisties, you in a RS, your old man in his FB or 5 series and you'll know.
Until recently, Jeff's car was stock. He recently swapped a 2.0L WRX motor into it. Nothing says you need to jump it both feet first. This route, you get what your looking for. Honestly, find one in good condition, low mileage, adult owned. You have a cherry car.
WHat part of NY?

Now I see where you mean, ipozestu. That may be a good idea...buy a car, learn its abilities, and when I'm ready, get the parts together and sacrifice the time to make it faster. Oh, and by the way, my dad has a Chevy Avalanche. We live about an hour north of the city.
Ah I see, "dad has had" past tense. When I was just starting out I didn't have any choice. I ended up with a '86 Chevy Spectrum, I rebadged it with"rectum". I loved the car though. I had a lot of fun and oh the memories. This is the first taste of freedom. Enjoy it. I seriously can not come up with a good reason why you should not put a 2.5RS close to the top of your list. Good luck in your search. hang and make sure you post your pics when you get your new ride.

I'd sell the tahoe, get an RS and upgrade the handling. You'd find me ranting about another new driver with an SUV before you'd find me ranting about a kid with a WRX.
I say get the RS and upgrade handling because thats what you need more than power. At your age theres no need to go 0-60 in whatever amount of seconds, but handling can save your *** (AWD saved me from getting t-boned by a cop in the rain). The RS would teach you to be a responsible driver and still allow you to have fun.
Oh, and to avoid confusion, in 2006 it changed from 2.5RS to 2.5i for some reason, same car though

The Tahoe will keep YOU safe...cant say much about the people you share the road with tho
Just jokin. You appear mature for your age. Whatever you get, take your time and learn the vehicle, and resist the urge to find its limits.
I agree with the above...get a non-turbo subie. The older RS are light and quick little beasts, and a swap for a WRX motor is common. Not to mention AWD and great safety features.
Either way, look around, research, and take your time.

I am 20 years old and my first car was an impreza L 2 door and it is an AMAZING car to learn to drive in has just the right amount of power to have fun in and not so much power that you will kill your self in the first 6 months of haveing it and trust me when i say i have fun with it
all the cars in that vid are basicly all 2.2 L or a legacy

and i am not encourging you to do that stuff just showing you it has the potential to do it and it isnt an over powered car to learn to do it on

See, I love how the old "L" and RS looks, but I'm concerned with size. Statistics show that I'm in the most likely group of people in the country to get in a crash, so I'm very concerned with safety. The 90s Subarus seem to be too small. Are they still safe?

The Tahoe may be physically safer if it is involved in a crash. The problem is, it's probably more likely to be involved in a crash because it's a big dopey truck that reacts too slow in an emergency..... and being top heavy and a gas guzzler doesn't help either. All the mommies think that the SUV will make them safer, but it won't save them from their bad driving.

I wouldn't say it's a bad choice. I picked up my 06 TR in April of last year when I was 17, and I love it. It doesn't necessarily take years of driving to be a responsible driver..Contrary to popular belief. I told myself I wouldn't really touch it for at least a year or two but...that didn't last very long. I have a long list of mods I've done now - all well researched.
I can say though, that when I have gotten myself into warm water, AWD has proved very effective for quick counter steering response. Before the wrx I was driving a ford expedition...that thing was a boat. I see nothing wrong with the wrx as a car for you, given that you are as mature on the roads as you are on the forums. Don't get me wrong, an RS or a more recent 2.5i would be a great choice as well, and like others said you could always do an engine swap later if you really craved the power. I just was attracted to the whole package
. Do what you want and don't worry about what others will think.

pwn, I'm glad to hear that somebody else my age (or close to it) has a WRX. Thanks for the positiveness, too...it's good to hear from somebody that has faith in my responsible driving.
I think now I just need to decide if I want to get a WRX from the start, or build up a WRX. How well do the new 2.5i's respond to mods? How fast can they be made?
