thats why i asked if he had a fmic. if he still has the top mount i wouldnt touch the scoop. if he has a fmic the reverse cowl or scoop would work better (supposedly) it will pull the air that passes threw the i/c and rad back out of the engine bay. kanami ( i cant spell it make a nice reverse scoop hood for the 02 wrx dont know if they have 1 for the new 04 models though.

i think bottom line, if you have watched best motoring final battle impreza vs. lancer. they make very good key points
1. Evo is more computers than STi is more mechanical
2. STi has more comfort built in and reliabilty
3. Evo doesnt
4. Subaru are built more power
5. Subaru's are symetrically built car, with the engine more towards the center for better overall balance.
6. Evo crap
and the list can go on....
hey you guys think I am subaru bias?

The Evo has an intercooler and more boost with the stock turbo though. So I imagine that the airflow throught the vents is plenty good for those purposes.
This is my first WRX (my fourth Subaru) and I've only had it since october, so I don't know much about high performance equipment, so pardon my ignorance.
I just prefer the speed without the flash, so I'd like to lose the scoop.

FMIC= front mount innercooler
the evo has the inner cooler in the front not on top the engine. the vents on the evo are to let heat out.
the sti/wrx has top mount innercooler you need the scoop. you can get a fmic for it. then you can lose the scoop they cost from 1000 to around 1500. for a good one.
if you take the scoop off and just put a vent in place i dont think you will have enough air flow for the innercooler and you will get Early det. cause the air will be to hot going into the engine. hope that help if you have a wrx you dont want to do an fmic upgrade with out a turbo upgrade. you can but from what i have heard people say it pretty laggy. i ran the vf30 when i did fmic upgrade it ran smooth as stock just more power at 20 psi on 93 octane. just a tip get a good set of grounding wire if you have early det they clear up alot of it. worked on 3 wrx that had trouble running high boost. mine 20 psi vf 30,gaboon 16 psi stock turbo, and a white one that stopped by J.A.performance with E.D. trouble he was 16 psio stock turbo too. hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Sorry for going off topic.
BTW, I've driven the Evo and I think it feels lighter, both in terms of nimbleness and in cheapness (thus good and bad.) I love the STi, but you must take into account that I'm an ex muscle car driver, so I like the heaviness and torque of the STi over the Evo's handling.
Both would beat the stuffing out of my old 400HP Buick Regal (yes, there is such a thing -- when you put an LT1 in it, and no I didn't actually pay for it -- my roomate owed me money for rent, so he gave me his car.) It would do a 14 second 1/4 and I thought I was a god.
consider me a properly enlightened AWD convert.

Honestly, I think they are both really good, just different. The STi, at least in stock form, can be a little more usefull here in Cali. with stoplights and traffic becasue of its larger displacement and "muscle car" like acceleration. The EVO, again at least in stock form, seems to be the better handler, making it better for the twisties and more open roads. I prefer the interior of the STi and the exterior of the EVO. I find the history and pedigree of the STi to be more interesting/better. All that being said, I personally prefer the STi for one major reason, the Suby community. We suby owners all seem to get along. There are fewer "boy racer" owners of STi's than EVO's, at least in my area. More Suby owners seem to be true enthusiasts, and that is important to me.

Instead, why not give us your impressions, since you've owned both cars. What version EVO did you own? I'm assuming it wasn't the USDM version VIII. Was it modified?

I didn't read but the first two messages in this topic, so forgive me if this sounds like anyone elses.
I personally love the STi, but Subaru is really going to have to have something special to counter the Evo MR.

I have an 2005 Sti and my good friend has a 04 evo. I have driven both and would take an evo if you wanted to give it to me. The ONLY thing that the evo has better out of the box is the handdling, not that its a huge diffrence, the evo just has less body roll. Once you put a rear sway bar on the sti it handdles just as well. The power of the sti is much greater than the evo out of the box. Also you would have to wait another year before you can get an mr evo with the adjustible center diff. Plus throw a RS-R exhaust on a STI and throw one on a evo, if you listen to the diffrence you just can't beat the sound of a flat four!!!!
