those parts are the exhaust manifold from a wrx/sti, also known as "headers"

the parts i circled are the flanges

flange - A protruding rim, edge, rib, or collar, as on a wheel or a pipe shaft, used to strengthen an object, hold it in place, or attach it to another object

As you can tell, the flanges on these parts hold the exhaust manifold (header) to the wrx heads and also connect the manifold to the uppipe.

True, I always hear domestics refering to it as headers, but imports are manifolds.

Ummm, import or domestic it doesn't matter. I hear those Domestics call it Gas when they put in the gastank. Maybe we should call it petrol. I have had "Headers" on my VW bug, A Datsun 240z etc.

They are usually called exhaust manifolds when they are stock, Headers when they are aftermarket.

Well, domestic guys use both terms too. We usually call the stock pieces exhaust manifolds while the nice tubular aftermarket pieces are called headers.

edit: I need to type faster.....

I think you are missing an important distinction here: An exhaust manifold originally referred to the cast iron original equipment piece while a header was a a tubular steel high performance piece designed to flow better.

This distinction has become a bit blurred as many vehicles currently come from the factory with tubular exhaust, but I think it still serves well to refer to cast iron pieces as exhaust manifolds and tubular steel pieces as headers.

Wow look at you aren't you special... I said I *hear* it that way when people are talking, didn't say one was correct or the other. When i overhear domestic drivers talking they almost always use headers. At least with the Subaru people here, they refer to it as a manifold.

I'm going to call my intake manifold a header too, because it's also attaches to the head.

I hate to get involved in an argument if I can help it, but................Manifolds are cast. Headers are of tubular construction. It doesnt matter if they are on a V-8, V-6,I-4, Flat-4, or a Martian Space Ship...............
Let me know what you think......
