This whole notion about loosing the boxer sound is non-sense.
Unless you buy a true equal length manifold (which cost over $1500 and only few companies make it) you will not loose any boxer sound.
Your exhaust will just sound more raspy. It will always sound like a Subaru. It will never sound like a HONDA. That is just a bunch of bs.
4-1 will give you more top end.
4-2-1 will give you more mid-range and is good for spool up.
There are only few headers that have an integrated uppipe in them. If you are planning to stick with bolt-on turbo's, that is a good choice as you will eliminate any posibility of leakage between the uppipe and the header. They are much harder to install as you have to jack the engine up a tad to get it intalled. Also, you CANNOT do it on jack stands. You need a lift.
Uppipes alone are not that hard to do. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being changing an air filter and 10 being replacing the clutch, I would give an uppipe install a 5.

Sorry bout that it's just from what I heard on an sti with headers and TBE I just thought it didn't sound as nice as other cars. I really like the sound of the boxer. So yeah, raspy is a better word for it.

sorry for stealing the thread but.....question for everyone: what do you guys think of the change in sound after adding headers.(the RASPY sound) do you like or dislike it in your own opinion?
i have never heard a suby w/headers so cant make my own judgement. i was thinking of getting a 4-2-1. thanks in advance

I like it. I recommend wrapping the header in good quality thermal wrap to prevent any noise to be coming from the header itself. Since the stocker is very heavily insulated, the header itself is very quiet.

Header install...
There's only one WRX I saw that sounded like a conventional inline-4 engine configuration. To tell you the truth it was weird seeing a WRX that sounds like that. I have the GT-Spec V2 headers w/Up-pipe, Invidia downpipe and the HKS Carbon-Ti catback and it sounds just fine.
True Equal Length header system will make the WRX sound like the regular inline-4's and the Un-equal length headers will keep that boxer sound...

If you put an equal length header onto a Subaru, it will still not like an inline 4. It will sound different from stock WRX, but it will not sound like anything else out there.
Listen to the rally car. That's what it will sound like more or less.

I-4 Sound...
This particular WRX really sounded like it had an I-4 engine.
Let me correct myself here then. From what I heard, that particular WRX sounded like it had an inline 4 engine but then again it was not really high revving. From my understanding, to hear that "WRC Impreza" sound, you really have to redline the car...
I understand that boxer-4's will never sound like the conventional I-4 motors b/c of the fact that it's a flat four configuration...

p.s.
If Equal-Length headers can produce a WRC sound on our cars, then I shoulda picked the GT-Spec V3 header system then...Oh well, I guess I'll live and learn.
