Again basic physics here dude:

Objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted apon by an aposing force.

In this case drag is the force you have to overcome, however in most modern cars, the drag on the car is < the amount of power required to stay at speed.

i cant tell you how many times going to SF from south bay, that i would see some douche weaving thru traffic in San Mateo, for example, then i would meet up with Joe Speeder about 3 lights into the city and wave at him.

If you drive at your top gear rpm in one gear lower, you will have the same gearing-based efficiency with less air drag due to the lower speed. Just an example. The trick is to be low enough rpm to save fuel, but high enough to still be in an acceptable torque range so as not to lug the engine.

Today's cars are geared to be happier at today's speeds, however, there is no two ways about it - you will get better fuel mileage at a lower speed in the proper gear (I think 45-50 was mentioned) than at a higher speed - say 70-80. Some cars do get better mileage at higher speeds than other cars, but that same car will most likely do slightly better pushing less wind drag, all else being equal.

LOL, he's on my ignore list so I only see quoted posts... That thing about the lifted truck with the gearing is just funny, and incorrect. No way, no how - ESPECIALLY when you add more mass and drag into the picture! Too funny..

You mean like wind and drag? A touch of gravity? Mmmm hmm.

I saw a VW Thing which was painted like a tiger hauling *** today. Does that counteract the RUF?

I think that driving that slow when traffic is flowing normally should be ticketed just as much if not more than going 80mph.

Too me its much more dangerous to have someone going 30mph under the speed of traffic than someone going 10 miles over. But you NEVER see people like that get popped. I hate it.

I commute on a 1 lane each way canyon road everyday. I get stuck behind cars and trucks of all kinds that are going 25-35mph under the speed limit. You'll come around a blind corner and bam there's a car going 30mph slower than you are.

Pisses me off as much as anything else I think. I mean people can't read the slow traffic move over signs, or turn outs or know that common decency says move over when you look up and see a car coming at you. Hell I've pulled over for cars when I'VE been going over 80.
