Mod or not?
If you want a car that is a beast as is, get the EVO. If you're planning on modding it, well then either car will grow to suite your needs. My buddy has an 06 sti that is a complete beast. It is not only his daily driver but also his track car and it will hold it's own against anything. Power, handling, reliablility. It's a total package. So if you're planning on doing some work to the car, I'd just go with the one you think looks better.

i would never buy a used evo or sti unless it came with a major extended warranty... seriously.

But thats just meIf you were to get one of the other, id say just like what everyone else said..its your personality really..If you want something aggressive looking, performs awesome, but has crappy interior go with the evo...but if you want something that has the same two features but with better quality interior go with the sti...they both will reach or come close to each other performance/handling wise...goodluck

I went through this dilemma last year - I drove the Evo 8, 9 and a few different model STi's and I will admit that stock for stock the Evo does handle significantly better and is slightly faster.
But that said I bought a used 04 STi and have no regrets at all - Im glad I didn't go to the dark side The fun factor, the giant scoop, bullet proof 6spd and boxer rumble just cant be beat in my opinion. Its all personal preference and you gotta do what your gut tells you (plus I just couldnt bring myself to buy a used Mitsu!).

I was in the same spot a couple years ago. Ended up chosing the STI for personal reasons. In my mind, the evo just felt cheap and has kind of a ricey look to it. The STI just looks like a more solid car. I don't plan on making it a dedicated track car so either one would have been more than ok.
If you think the STI won't be much different than your current WRX, your completely wrong. I have several friends with WRX's with the same mods that I have on my STI and they feel way different. My car feels like a monster in comparison to theirs. You need to drive both before you decide, but either way I'm sure you won't regret the decision for whatever one you go with.

you should really drive an sti before making your decision. wrx and sti.. no comparison. the sti just feels way more solid than the wrx.. esp. w/ the 6spd tranny.

You can't come to a subaru forum and get a unbiased oppinion. My honest opinion, get a EVO unless you want to buy a STi and immediately swap the pistons out or stay completely bone stock, its not a IF its gonna break its a WHEN its gonna break. The 4G63 is a awesome motor, its been around forever and its had any problems worked out pretty well and the cast iron block is a plus (probably the first good mitsu motor, lol). Now the EJ257 is new which is why I think it has soo many problems, and the JDM and EDM Sti doesn't even have it they have the better EJ207. Now the EJ20 I would take over a 4G63 in reliability so do't think Im some subaru hater. What I don't know about the EVO is how reliable the tranny is, so your guess is as good as mine. I am actually considering getting one myself, but Im not getting rid of the STi one I get my new AXIS block, hopefully that will solve my motor woes.
I think its the exact opposite really, STi's break down all the time, EVO's don't. There are already people with modified EVO's with 150k still DD (I have been reading the evolutionM forums).

Okay update. I drove around the STi and was completely blown away, it was everything I loved about my WRX except a million times better. My original goal for my wrx was to build it comparable to an STi, now that i've driven one, I couldn't see how my lil ol' wrx could even come close to it. It was truly an amazing machine.
The only reason I was asking people's opinion was to get hard facts about engine problems, long term benefits of each car.

but like steve said, the EJ25 has some issues which is true, he researched it... the ej20 is a better reliable motor.. but the ej25 is very nice and torqy
I own a Wrx wagon and had a Lgt..with that said, a co-worker of mine, has allowed me to drive his evoMr (gonna say not to much different then a base evo) numorous times. and If I had the choice over the evo and an sti..I would probably be leaning twords the evo. only cause I do the occasional touge and love the way it handles/feels. Over my wagon and Lgt. But the evo is probably not the best Daily. He hasnt had any major problems with his engine/drivetrain. But he has had quite a few of suspension issues, not big ones but enough to wanna get rid of your car if you dont work at a dealership.

Hey Ryan, I just call a spade a spade. But I have always loved the way the EVO's look, but was turned off by thoughts of reliability problems (which I found out later was kinda BS), but I love my STi too. Thats why I want both! lol.
