I think because all of the wannabe yuppies shop there. I HATE how oblivious most of the shoppers there are. "Oh, I think I'll walk as slowly as possible down the aisle regardless of whether or not anyone is behind me."

i just had chili and rice. it was free chili made by a friend and it wasn't really rice. it was some paella rice i found in the cupboard from like a year ago. which reminds me of...
stagg chili + random pasta
canned tuna + velveeta shells and cheese
both winners... i had that once a week in college. i also tended to grab whatever steak was on sale and a 10lb bag of potatoes (for like $2). broil the steak, cut and season the potatoes and stick 'em in to be steak fries.

The two greatest cheap foods are:
1. Gohan Desuyo! (a.k.a. Japanese survival food) and rice:

And
2. Chuuka Zanmai, the BEST instant noodles on the planet (can even put some ramen shops' noodles to shame)

When I was in college, I got a rice cooker as a gift. That was my staple. Large bag of rice from costco, flat of green beans, pinto, and black beans. Rice cooker cooks a ton of rice easy and perfect. heat green beans/beans in micro. Find affordable meat. Actual meal for HELLA cheap and quick.
I lived on that.
I lived on that.
1: Best cheap meat dish: 2 cups of rice and 2 Chinese Sausage (Lop Cheurng?)
no pun intended... Cool the Chinese sausage while heating up the rice. Perfect! Also doubled as a easy way to heat up soups and Top Ramen too. Best alternative if no chinese sausage... KIM CHEE! (especially Kohala brand Kim-chee)
2: Mac & Cheese w/ 1lb ground beef.
3: Toasted sourdough bread and French's Yellow Mustard FTW

I hear you. I remember being so effin broke when I first got out of the army just trying to find a job, let alone a decent one. I remember several times having less than $20 to buy food to last me 2 weeks, seriously. What I had to do was go to grocery outlet (hella cheap, but almost expired food basically) and they had 4 for a dollar mac and cheese and 4 for a dollar cans of tuna (I wasnt about to be picky on whether it was water or oil added). I would make the mac and cheese with just water no milk and add the tuna. When you where hungry it was the most delicious thing you have ever had. I would also go to the wonder/hostess store and get $0.39 loaves of bread and freeze them so they wouldnt mold, and get a jar of mayo and some bologna (always the cheapest btw) and if I was really ballin that paycheck some processed cheese in the wrapper, lol. But top ramen and cup-o-noodles were a given, I think they were 5 for a dollar at the time I could take them to work so it was a winner.

Huge bag of rice - and random sauces:
Peanut Sauce, Soy Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, and sometimes a BBQ sauce.
Back in the day, I would subsist on that for weeks on end. One big plate of rice fills the tummy, and is about as cheap as you can get.

choku dori - WHERE do you find Chuuka Zanmai for cheap? That's one of my favorite instant noodles, but it's always like $1.20 a bag!
This week in college I ate/ made:
1. White rice with pork sung (dehydrated, chewy, cotton-candy-looking pork strings. sounds gross but we Chinese like to eat it with porridge
$4.00 a jar, 25-40 meals)

2. White rice with spiced and flavored fermented tofu ($2.50 a jar, 15-20 meals). One tiny block of that will literally satisfy a whole meal cuz its so flavorful

3. Clam chowder in a can... sometimes with white rice

4. Asian sweetened bread
man I'm poor. I miss those 3-4 dish meals + soup that my father used to serve to the table every night
