yes, it would be nice just to brush it off.
But if the 'defendant' "AR" googles his name, this thread comes up at the top of the search results.
Say "AR" goes to apply for a job at a bank. And as part of the hiring process the hiring manager googles "AR's" name. The hiring manager just sees that "AR" is being accused of fraud/theft, doesn't have the time to read the WHOLE thread, and decides not to hire "AR". Now the 'plaintiff' (vendor) is potentially liable for financial damages due to defamation of "AR's" character.
I have a buddy in a similar situation, pending legal action against a business/entity for online defamation of character which lead to job loss.
Lesson - Lets not let $50 of oil turn into a BP'esque Fail. If you operate a business, do so in a professional manner, not as-if you are TMZ.

On the other hand, when an equally heinous action is committed - such as posting slanderous comments and divulging personal information about someone - it is overlooked, and childish expressions like "happy ending" are repeated to make light of the situation.
Where is the consistency here?
No matter though, I'm a firm believer in equal and opposite reactions.

I'd also never share anyone's personal information. I've been asked before for phone numbers and addresses over the course of a billion years and I've said no every time. Even before privacy policy laws became so strict.

So to take it to the next level, when will google get sued for this? That seems like the next place to go to completely clear your name of this, right? Can you call google and ask them to pretty please take down the cached data?

If a scrap of paper has a partial or full name, phone number, VIN number, address... anything really, and isn't required to be kept on file we shred it. Period.

i don't know about you guys but $50 is still $50 g'dam dollars - period. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't about the money, more the principle and AHQ was trying to help out other vendors just in case.
AR - again, sorry this happened to this degree, but I think if I was in his shoes, I might have done the same or similar.
Hope this thread gets squashed and everyone forgets.
