Upgrading hard drive on PS3
I am tired of deleting my old demos. With the release of GT5, the hard drive on my PS3 is filled up.
I want to upgrade the 60gb drive to something bigger. I bought some PSX games off the PS store so I want to transfer EVERYTHING onto the new one.
How do I do it cleanly?
How big should I go?
5400 rpm or 7200rpm?
Should I do SSD?

what is the current HD on your ps3?i went with a 500gig with 5400 rpm, just so i can be within specs of the oem.not really much of a diff with 7200 and like what rau pointed out it has to be 2.5 sata.reason i asked the size of the hd is because when you make a back up of it to transfer to the new hd the back up size would be identical.and an hd dock would save you a lot of headache and an extra hd to use for transferring everything.be careful taking off the screw on the hd carriage inside the ps3,they can be easily stripped and sony doesnt give any replacements anymore.

A 7200RPM hard drive is what you'll find in almost all desktops. It will cut down on load times as well as write times to the drive. The only reason why they have 5400RPM drives is for less power consumption, less heat distribution, and are safer in a laptop with the constant vibrations of moving it around. If none of these things bother you, get the 7200RPM drive. They now have 640GB 7200RPM 2.5" drives that will work just fine as well.
Get your harddrive and the 2.5 adapter to USB from newegg. The 7200rpm option is nice but are you really in a rush to play games? Like evo said, keep it stock rpm. I would go with a 320gb or a 250gb. NO to SSD unless you want to spend more than what you bought the ps3 for.
Rip old hdd to iso and format new hdd with iso, this will give it an exact image I believe.

Thanks guys. I just ordered the 500GB Seagate Momentus drive and Sata USB adapter to transfer files. I decided to keep it safe and went with the 5400rpm version.
What utility can I use to rip the old drive to ISO?

I just saved my game files and loaded the new HD in the PS3. It will format the HD for you then just load your game files via USB stick.
That PS3 failed on me 2x (laser died) so I bought a slim 250GB. I ended up pulling the HD i put in there and use it as storage (2.5 case failed on me usb connector came off the board. I am unable to solder back because it's too small I would need paste and bake)
haha damn that sounded more like a rant....

i did the suggested sony method, well pretty much winging it most of the way lol!!you can back up youre entire hd in a flash drive big enough or a powered external storage which i did.slap the new hd in then re-install the back up on the new hd.like what al said also the ps3 can do the formatting for you once you put in the new HD.
