SSFWRX - agree with pretty much everything. Having to fly a few times a year, I'd rather spend more time getting through security and deal with all that crap only to have some reassurance of safety.

Yep, and I'm flying to the UK next week. I called this morning to see how that effects me and I can't even bring my freaking car keys on board, I have to check them through. So if they lose my luggage on the way back I'll be stuck at the airport. FOCKERS!

Plot foiled? Not entirely, we're almost afraid of our own shadows.

I'd rather be late than dead. That was a good job they did. They arrested 3 more.

I have always thought that cell phones should be "stored" when in a plane because they can be used to track the exact location of an aircraft.

BUT cell phones can also be used to alert the authorities if their is a problem on the plane. The new GPS phones could be dangerous though. Everything has a good and a bad side. People will always find a way around if they are determined

I can't get into details but lets just make a point of it that IED's can and will look like anything and it will be as intricate as the person who makes it wants it to be. A contact lens solution bottle full of liquid explosives is big enought to bring a plane down. Detonators are the size of a pen cap, some are merely light bulbs. Batteries can be anything from the common 9v to a polariod or cordless phone battery. The switch can be anything....literally anything...two wires touched together, a toggle, cell phone, or any timing device....**** even an altimeter that alarms when you reach a certain altitude, using the wire leads to the speaker as the switch.

Point is we can do so many things to screen these people...it only takes 4 people from 4 different locations each carrying one component, meet at the restroom passing off the parts. BAM assembled IED and 2 of the people only had to have a battery and some sort of switch. The other a bottle, and the last one a flash bulb detonator.

The idea is to do everything you can to make any potential person realize there plan may not work. Adding the doubt into their mind may be all it takes. Its not that they are scared of dying, yet scared of being caught....then the whole plot is a waste and exposed.

FYI....a light has never been a prohibited item. Lighter yes...and thats federal law....not a rule.

As a side not refer to internet searches for "project bojinka," as this is a repeat of it. We are told that if terrorists fail they will revise and replan. Adapting their ways to achieve success. The WTC is a prime example,.
You work at security, so that shows you a certain perspective on these happenings. You seem to be ignoring the public's perspective however, which is understandable.

You are right about the insurmountable challenge that it must be to try and catch all the badguys. The truth is, it's impossible. All you can do is your best effort, and scare away the majority of them.

The biggest problem is it's not proactive, it's completely REactive. Someone has a bomb in their shoe, now we search shoes. Someone has a bomb in a hat, now no more hats. Some "smart people" need to do some brainstorming and come up with some methods that work for even the things we haven't seen yet. Maybe some collaboration with the folks who secure Ben Gurion, see what they do - and use the good parts. It's a serious issue, and you are dead right about the public being stupid. Some of us however are appalled at the general stupidity of the security guards and how REDICULOUS and USELESS most of the drills we, the public are put through really are. If they had some smarter people who were not all charged up and ready to show someone 'what for' because they "tried to smuggle" the lighter they forgot they had in their bag, better things would happen. I realize it's a difficult situation and that the security doesn't pay much, completely explaining the level of mentality we usually deal with at security checkpoints. IMHO that right there shows that it's not being taken seriously. This is our lives here, and we should have well paid people who are thorough yet courteous rather than the majority of the security personnell we usually see, who appear to be quite a step down the maturity ladder even from local police.

Can you confirm this - especially the laptops? I have had my luggage destroyed or lost 5 times now, and if I have to check my laptop (even my work laptop) and not have music (of my choice) on board, I am done flying. I fly a lot, used to go back/forth from the UK every month. It sucks as it is. It can't suck much worse than being in a seat for 11 hours wondering if I will even be able to do my job when I get there.
