Hmm, well it seems like having no dyno fans can be less of an equalizing agent and more of a randomizing one.

Also, having various weird components in the car MAY actually give an advantage to a particular tune. While I think everyone offers silicone hoses as an option to their reflash package, Cobb doesn't like the uppipe approach, and everyone has a different take on what restrictor should be on what package.

It's too bad the ECUs were selected for a not-so-stock car, too. My wagon is bone stock, I would have volunteered it if I ever dragged myself out of bed yesterday

I dont think it really matters....they all played with the SAME car!!!

There cant be any excuses....seeing that some had more time with the car and even tuned a bit!! I heard it was supposed to be a base map...no tuning. But I guess rules were ment to be boken.

Bill, congrats!! Even though you went last and had a Heat soaked car to work with. This isnt the first time I have seen you install a map and get safe, higher numbers than Vishnu's "BEST HE COULD DO" tune!! I am glad I have a GREAT tuner working on my car now I refer everyone I talk to, about tuning...to you @ I-speed. Customer Service is also above Vishnu.

Someone doesnt like what I say...too bad! The truth hurts!!

For accurate information, I think everyone needs to wait for Vaus (who organized and conducted the comparison) to post up the results. It seems to me that misinformation spreads faster than information these days. Ah, the beauty of the internet.

You forgot to mention that my car is weirdly fast, for stock (with a uppipe)

What is the average baseline for a stock WRX on ATP's dynojet?

From Vaus up at the other site:

First of all, the day of the test was extremely hot and not ideal for performance testing. That being said we did go ahead and conduct the test on three ECU's + stock. All of the ECU's had a tough time making power and most of the cars we tested that day knocked pretty bad. Out of the three ECU's tested, Vishnu's Stage Zero was the only one that didn't produce audible knock. Cobb's Stage 1 pinged several times and started pulling timing to work out the pings. I-Speed didn't actually have a proper map for a stock car with an Bill attempted to use his map for uppipe, IC hoses, and 1 heat range coolder spark plugs. This map pinged BADLY above 5500RPM on the first run so we decided not to attempt any more runs fearing damaging the engine. I-Speed's map did make more power before we shut down the run but it also pinged much worse than the rest of the ECU's. I just wanted to clarify before I writeup all the specifics.

Suby_Dude, maybe you should make a note of this on your website.

Thanks

I think Shiv definitely deserves some congratulations, too Can't wait to see the dyno charts come up...

Thanks, Bill.

Sounds like Edgar's got a freak of a car there :P 35-40whp over stock with an uppipe, hoses, and weird restrictor? Wouldn't any company's ~20whp first-stage reflash be a downgrade at that point? :P

hmmm, i'm pretty sure i'd want a car that doesn't ping, not one that puts down 3 more HP and then grenades.

i'm not bagging on anyone's "tuning" here, but this "experiment" was nearly pointless. why the hell would you dyno a turbocharged car with no fans? it makes absolutely no sense as it does not simulate any possible type of driving condition.

if you're going to buy a $100,000+ dynomometer, why in god's name would you not spend $300 on some fans? that's just ridiculous.

why i-speed would show up to an event where the rules require an ECU tuned for a stock WRX without an ECU tuned for a stock WRX is beyond me. there MUST be good reason for this.

if there is anything to be learned from this, it is that vishnu tunes with a margin of error that encompasses impossibly horrible conditions and is still able to put down solid power.

now let's all save up to buy a fan so that we can have a dyno day that's not pointless.

I think i-speed is the only one of the three that doesn't do base "stage" maps (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The $650 ECUTEK reflash you pay for includes 1-2 hours of custom tuning.

That's not to say with their experience they couldn't have provided a base map, but it IS closer to the actual product they sell, right?

I don't know what the fan situation was, but that was my take as well - those conditions are so weird that you really can't just say it's even because everyone had to deal with the same thing. Once you're in that no-air-no-flow environment, anything can happen. Shiv's might have pinged if they did another run. I-speed's might not have pinged at all...who knows...
