I just talked to my buddy who's a Neveda State Trooper, and word is that I-80 is practically "SCHEDULED" to close due to the whiteout conditions. It looks like it will be shut down fr: at least 10am Fri to 10pm Fri. I'm guessing they may extend the timeframe... esp. since the Blizzard Warning is in effect fr: 4am Fri to 10am Sat.

simple "math":
Blizzard = Heavy Snow + High Winds
Blizzard = WhiteOut
WhiteOut = Road Closure
...
Blizzard = Road Closure

Obviously, Hwy 50 & Hwy 88 should share the same fate, if not worse.
*edit*In case ya missed this fr: my earlier post: CalTrans Road Info.

Talking resident expert

Boardoholic: Haaa... I only said Lance b/c I'm almost sure you've said that he's our resident expert. If I'm wrong, consider yourself promoted, Ray! Congratulations!

OneManArmy: nah. lance is definately the expert. Until I get some heli days in I won't be more than a podium finisher..haa. He's the champ.
Thanks for the love guys! I appreciate the accolades.

As far as the road conditions; whatever they are...take it slow and keep plenty of distance between you and the next crazy guy.

I'll be calling caltrans all night on Saturday and 1st thing Sunday morning to see whats up for 88/Kirkwood. I'm hoping I'll get a window and make it without any problems...but it wouldn't be the 1st time I've have to turn around. I remember waiting for about 4 hrs until they opened 88 coming up from Jackson...but boy was it worth the wait! Can always go 50 to Myers to 88 to Krikwood. Think that way tends to get cleared 1st due to the SLT people having preference to the lower valley peeps.

I'll be riding the FISH 160 for sure where ever I end up that day.

Anyway, wish me luck.

I'm gonna keep such a watchful eye on the next two storms coming in. I'm hoping we have a decent window to make it up there at the break o' dawn on Sun. I gotta take care of a buncha stuff on Mon, but may try to get it done tomorrow or postpone it til Tues.

Ya gotta love that radar loop of all that blue & purple. And that's just the tail end of storm #1. Check out this one from weather.com...

... See that low pressure cell spinning toward Northern Cali? And notice the speckled dots just to its east. That's a lotta cold air behind it for Sunday's accumulations. Woohoo!

Btw, Lance, I'm sure you'll be rippin' thru that stuff like buttah w/ the Fish!

Awesome pix! That looks like some big-time slashin'. So jealous of yo' skillz!

...

Practically ALL the resorts have shut down lift operations by 1230, if they were lucky enough to get a few of them cranking safely this morning. Tomorrow's outlook ain't too promising either.

Chain controls along the usual routes thru the mtns.

The only current closure is Hwy 88 at the Carson Spur due to avy control. They had a mudslide earlier down in the valley, north of Hwy 12. But that section is cleared & open to traffic.

Westbound I-80 was closed for a short time in Truckee. But all gravy now.

So far, so good. But the real test is the next 15 hrs or so. Good luck to our folks at CalTrans.

Resort Operations:
Most resorts had limited lift operations today due to high winds. With the exception of those resorts w/ good wind-protection (like N* & Sierra), almost all lifts to the summits were on hold. Boreal still reports that they're closed due to loss of power. Various snow reports state from FIVE to SIX feet of fresh since the first storm began on Thurs.

SNOWFALL AND VISIBILITIES NEAR ZERO AT TIMES WILL MAKE TRAVEL
EXTREMELY DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. STAY AT HOME AND DO NOT
TRAVEL IF AT ALL POSSIBLE THROUGH TONIGHT.

EXPECT SNOWFALL RATES OF 3 INCHES PER HOUR OR MORE IN THE SIERRA
ALONG WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF THUNDER SNOW. SNOWFALL RATES OF THIS
MAGNITUDE MAKE IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR ROAD CREWS AND EMERGENCY
PERSONNEL TO KEEP ROADS PASSABLE AND TO ASSIST STRANDED VEHICLES. IF
YOU ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL IN THE SIERRA TONIGHT YOUR CHANCES OF BEING
STRANDED IS HIGH.
Tomorrow's Outlook:
"Choose Your Own Adventure." Snow levels drop to around 2000ft. Hopefully the winds will have "calmed" enough to get ALL the lifts turning. But I personally think Monday is THE day to shred the gnar. The gusts will be considerably less & the third storm's light snow showers should be ending by noon.

Have fun out there, y'all!:RockOn - not mine:
