I'm gonna probably brave the conditions late friday night since my cabin is at about 4000 feet. It shouldn't be the worst conditions I've ever driven in. Pretty hairy but hopefully open.

i'm heading up, nabbed a cabin at soda springs for the weekend. cruising up mid-day tomorrow and will HOPEFULLY get back to the bay sometime sunday. i'm a tad bit worried about road closures sunday, but i figure soda springs is pretty low compared to most places...
have fun yall!

Anyone HOPING to enjoy a day on the slopes will likely have to wait til Sunday since the resorts are ALMOST GUARANTEED to shut down their lifts with the blizzard warning in effect.
So do yourselves, CalTrans and emergency personnel a favor:
STAY OFF THE ROADS ! ! !
Hell, even a powderhound like me knows better to heed the warning of i-club's resident snowsports expert (aka Lowball). I cannot stress enuff how dangerous travel in the Sierras will be over the next few days! So I shall repeat, THE RESORTS WILL SHUT DOWN ! So why go when there are no lifts to take you up to the enjoy those rewards of powpow?!?
Sorry! *steps down from pulpit* Be smart! And stay safe!

I hope you realize that Soda Springs is just an eyelash shy of the 7000ft mark! It's maybe only 3 or 4 miles away from the summit.

This weekend is bitter sweet for me.
The sweet part is all this snow we're getting.
The bitter part is we've had a cabin reserved in So. Lake for the past month for this weekend and it is looking like a lost cause trying to get up at all this weekend.
I guess I just need to hear it from you veterans and I think I know what the response will be, but would it be a bad idea to try leaving on Saturday morning, spend the night at our cabin, then ride at Heavenly on Sunday? Or should we just eat the penalty for canceling the cabin and try a day trip on Sunday?
Thank you for all the weather updates and recommendations.

As far as driving in fierce weather, you're one of the more experienced folks as well as one of the lucky folks at that! The cabin is below the 4000ft mark. Plus, if Hwy 4 is shut down & the snow level comes down considerably, I'm sure you know a couple secret spots to get in a few turns here and there.

You & Jordan have fun out there! And stay safe, bro!

Haaa... I only said Lance b/c I'm almost sure you've said that he's our resident expert. If I'm wrong, consider yourself promoted, Ray! Congratulations!

Yeah the cabin is good cause of the height. I can usually find my way passed any blocks and get up to the cabin. Once I'm there is just wait for the snow to blow over and make my way up.
Anyone going to tahoe would be crazy to travel at night between now and sunday. Anyone staying about 3000 feet is pushing it.
And I'd probably be too busy spinnin donuts..haaa. I need to buy a sled to put in the turns on off days. But even with a sled there's no way in hell I'd venture into the back country this weekend. Snowpack is gonna be VERY unstable.
Quite honestly, I'll be surprised if I don't read about at least one fatal accident and one accident with 30 plus cars... AND someone getting lost in the BC.
Seriously folks. Be careful out there. When it gets this deep this quick it's very unstable. Driving in these kinds of winds and visibilities is rough. Riding in this deep of snow can be rough. I blew my knee out in 5 foot of fresh.
everyone be safe can be smart most of all. I like an adventerous day driving and riding as much as the next guy but I want to read on monday that everyone here is safe.

I know most folks have just had some time off for the holidays, but see if you can use some sick time next week. Maybe Wed thru Fri!

I'm taking your advice. Hopefully if things look alright, I can leave on Saturday morning and if the road conditions don't turn us around, then we'll just gamble at the casino and hope for a chance to ride on Sunday. But if not then will be eating the cancellation penalty for the cabin.
I really do appreciate all of your advice, I've driven in inclement weather before, but you guys are far greater experts that me.
UPDATE: Cabin rental company is waiving cancellation fee for the weekend, rescheduling for next weekend FTW!
