This is so sad! My heart goes out to his family. This type of event remind me

This really sucks.. Myself, 07wrx4life, 04caliwrx and suby4justin witnessed this. We were going up Grandview Express when we saw a guy kneeling beside someone but we could only see his skis sticking out of the snow, but couldnt see anything else. Then we saw another guy frantically digging him out. We yelled down from the chair if everything was ok and the guy kneeling yelled out for help, we thought at first he was joking so we asked again and he yelled for help again. Now we knew he was serious and just by the tone in his voice. Once we got to the top we rushed over to the lift operator and told him about and exactly what tower number he was closest too. We then saw Ski Patrol get on their skis and bombing down to hill to get to them. We went back up the chair later and saw ski patrol with him and thought everything was ok. As we were going down a run we saw the MedEvac helicopter coming in and we all thought it must be serious, but never did we think the guy had died. So sad
Thats why we should always ride with a buddy and not get separated from each other.

"Hu had been skiing alone in an experts-only area of the Sierra-at-Tahoe resort and was not breathing when he was found on Sunday afternoon, the sheriff's office said."
The snowboarder...
"Two skiers saw the base of a snowboard sticking out and dug out a 30-year-old man, according to Bailey. The man had apparently been traversing around cliffs and fell.
Paramedics later pronounced the man, whose identity has not been released, dead in the resort's first aid room. "We've had four to five feet of snow in the last three days," Bailey said. "Everybody has pent-up fever for the steep and deep, but we counsel to always ski with a buddy, always ride with a buddy. This was a tragedy."
BOTH of them riding alone!!!!!

Looks like Kirkwood had an Avi as well. 2 caught. Both lived. 1 injured. Crazy.
I always tell people to be aware. Yes a bunch of powder is awesome but when 4 feet of the stuff dumps on top of rain soaks sun baked snow (ice bricks)... be friggin careful. I've been stuck head first once. Stuck in very very dangerous situations at least 3 times. I've pulled on guy out of a deep hole laying in running water. I've seen my buddies get burried in bounds and I've set off a pretty sizable avi. Been riding 20 years. I still don't ride alone.... ever.

Damn dude, that's tragic. It just goes to show that you have to be aware of where you're going along with your abilities and those you're riding with because even in pounds you're at risk at any time. Anything can happen.
Didn't you dig someone out last year? You see some isht dude...
RIP. This is a tragedy.

It's one of the reasons I didn't venture too far off the runs and stayed within eyesight of people on Saturday. I had an off feeling about the whole day so I stayed within my limits and didn't push myself to get the most fresh tracks.

Thats so freakin sad, very very scary stuff. Today was my first day trying to ski powder and I have felt very confident all season, but boy was it a whole different ball game. I fell several times and the deep light snow made it very difficult to even strap my skis back on if I lost one or both. Hands were sinking, boots were sinking....I can see how the fresh stuff could be VERY dangerous.
But my park skis are hardly ideal to be trying to hit any deep fresh stuff they are like knives through the ****

I wonder of there is any info out there on the best and fastest way to dig someone out without also getting yourself killed as well? I think that would be some valuable info for me to know, might save one of our lives.

More surface area less sink. Dig hard dig steady. If you start wailing as fast as you can you'll get tired and not be able to finish. Find the head if you can. Clear the face. Once they get air you start with the rest if the body. Carry a shovel if you can.

I was at Sierra on Sunday as well. Was this skier off to the right of the lift. We may have seen this skier as well, but it was snowing so hard, it was hard to make out if the guy was resting or not. Anyways, R.I.P. to those that passed away this weekend.
Here are some pics from that weekend to show how treacherous the weather was:
Outside our hotel at 7am

A fat bird sitting in a tree outside Heidi's window during our breakfast.

On the way to Sierra around 8am

Horrendous traffic leaving Sierra. Saw 3 cars that had been crashed into snow banks.

Thick snow storm coming into Placerville. Very weird. We stopped to eat in Placerville, and by the time we left, all the snow was gone as the storm moved on.

I've been buried twice in tree wells BAD. Once head first and nearly died and once I went straight down with my board under me. My head was probably 3 feet under the snow but I could see up. Took me over 45 minutes to climb out.
I'll say it again because it's that important... DO NOT RIDE ALONE!

I am heading up to my cabin this weekend in Meeks bay/Rubicon bay. Anyone heading up too? I would like to convoy if it is convenient. I can go 50 or 80 does not matter to me.
