Is the Pope going to hell?
Is the Pope going to hell?
Note, I am assuming there is a hell and it is roughly defined as the classical view portrays it
Evidence for him:
-He did a lot of good HR work, especially in his early days
-He finally encouraged the church to accept evolution
-Showed just how devoted he was to the teaching of Jesus when he forgave his own would-be assassin.
Evidence against him:
-Responsible for the death of many people by stifling scientific research
-Not resigning his post when he became unable to travel was a detriment to the church
-Got involved in political matters that were none of his business.
It's a tough call for me.

Karma, of course, being a Hindu/Buddhist term, something that the Pope and official Catholic canon deem as worshipping a false idol and therefore reason to go to hell. Furthermore, the Catholic cannon does not support the concept of reincarnation, so 'karma', being something that affects your future lives, doesn't really make sense in this context.
Besides, I can just make Pascal's wager on my deathbed and repent. All's forgiven at that point
.
Honestly - do you think 'karma' makes sense to someone like me who clearly thinks that religion in general is a way to make the masses more pliable?

Interesting to note
That the pope met with, and had several conferences with several leaders of several different faiths.
President Ikeda (Soka Gakkai International)
Dalai Lama
among others...
Nam Myoho Renge Kyo for the pope. May he find his happiness...in whatever form of eternity in which he finds himself.

Daredevil, I don't know which your faith is, if any, but your post really shows you know little about the purpose and especially the history of the bishop of Rome, not to mention that of the Roman Catholic Church and the Christian faith. The subject title of the thread alone shows a lot of ignorance on your part regarding John Paul's life and work.
While I am not Roman Catholic, and I disagree with many of the Church's views (most of which you probabaly are not aware beyond the knee-jerking political ones), I do know that John Paul cared deeply for the world, for the poor and oppressed. If he wasn't a good Pole, or a good American, or a good Italian, or a good liberal, or a good consevative, or a good whatever your personal socio-political agenda wishes he was, well then God bless him because it showed how deeply is own caring convictions ran.
I don't think there's any one on I-Club who comes anywhere near the personal sacrifices and the contributions in what he has done for peace and justice in this world. If John Paul is in perdition, I'm sure all of us deserve worse.

Yeah seriously, what jason said, I mean the guy NEVER got laid and hung out with poor people all the time. That's worth a place in the big house IMHO.
