What type of EMS was this car running? And was it running a CAI or short ram?

Cylinder #1 correct? Stock fuel rails?
40k miles, did the car ever have a 30k service done or was it maintained properly? Many people start skipping these once they begin modifying their car.
I would first inspect the fuel system. Broken rings/ring land = Detonation. I would rule out certain potential causes depending on mileage since the car was modified/tuned.
If the car slowly lost driveability, lack of power & pinging over time. I would head straight to the Fuel Filter. Cylinder #1 is last in line on the stock fuel rail.
Ofcourse, this isn't necessarily the answer, just potential causes.
That's my thought for now

The car had a EcuTek reflash, not sure who tuned it.
I believe the car had a 30k service, I would have to check with the owner. It has the stock fuel system albeit STI injectors so your theory of fueling could hold true. I know that the car was running fine (according to the customer) in October. Since October the car has lost 3 quarts of oil. I think I found about a Quart of that for him but using the IC as a oil catch can is not a good idea
The car is getting new filters, plugs etc etc anyway as a new motor has been dropped in and we're just finishing up with that today.

There's a lot to be said about conservatively tuning with proper modifications...
