Campbell's already signed, Flynn threw for Miami as well and I bet they'd take him over Smith...

If Manning goes to Tenessee, that leaves Hasselbeck out so theres a thought there.
After that its pretty much Rex Grossman

In the end, it was all about money. Out of the three teams, Denver is least likely to win a super bowl.

Niners need to get on their hands and knees and open their wallets to get Smith signed.

Now we'll have to overpay. ****ing idiots going after Peyton. Smart agent though bought himself a ton of leverage and will make both guys a ton of money.

Smith's only other offer is Miami at $8m/year. Don't know how long the contract length is. But still the same offer as what the niners were offering at $8m/year. You guys also have to consider that since Miami's 2 backup plans just failed (Manning and Flynn gone), they could just turn to the draft and look for a cheap QB instead of paying millions to Smith.

There's also reports that the 49ers' offer to Smith was on the table the whole time they were looking at Manning. Again, Smith had plenty of opportunity to sign. So who's exactly the bad guy here since both the niners and Smith were trying to "test the waters"?

Let's say Smith's feelings are hurt and he decides to go to Miami regardless of contract value. I hope he or his agent is smart enough to talk about legacy. Smith to Miami and they suck. He has solidified himself as one of the biggest busts.

Good point. If he were to re-sign with the 49ers, and stay healthy and successful through the 3 years, he could make much more money in the next contract than if he went to Miami and was unsuccessful. He would get a much cheaper contract, and potentially be a backup instead of a starter.

Also have to keep in mind, he and his wife like the Bay Area, so I'm guessing he'll stall for another week or so to make the 49ers sweat, then ultimately re-sign.

Yeah... Smith is playing this so damn smart. He just upped his value BIG TIME. No way the niners can get a QB in right now that will be an improvement immediately. Manning was the only chance.

I personally think the niners made all the right choices this off season and improved ALL of their weaknesses. Alex Smith is the right guy for them... right now. I'd look to improve that position along with RB next. Gore is getting worn out and Hunter is undersized. He needs a guy that can put in work with him.

Niners have a solid shot at a SB this year if the defense plays as good as it did last year.

The WR signings they made were all smart. Not the best of the best that was out there but improvements over last year for decent dollar amounts.
