So if someone moves from say, Nevada, and has recently purchased a car there, will they have to get rid of it and buy a car in CA? Does it have to do with smog, or MPG?

if the smog regulations are IDENTICAL in each state (with california being the strictest), it would not matter where you purchased your vehicle.

if your nevada car has the same smog rules as calfornia, then buying a car out of state would only benefit youif the price was drastically lower out of state.

now... if on the off chance that nevada does NOT go with the california smog rules, then if you purchased a car in nevada and brought it over to california and wanted to register it in california, you'd have to get it to pass california smog.

in which case, it'd be like driving to nevada to buy a california car.

and the most important thing... this impacts AMERICAN automakers, and primarily vehciles built in 2011 AND LATER...

this should NOT impact our cars very much at all.

That's pretty far fetched to think people will drive out of state to buy a car that emits more crappy gases...

I think the decision is fine. California wants more emissions control.... and we should. Compared to other states, California is shooting out wayyy more crappy gases than say Nevada or some other state that doesn't have as many cars. One of the ways to fix this problem is to have California shoot for higher emission standards to try and reduce what California already pushes out. Japanese car companies already saw this coming, and prepared for it, so I dont think the emission standards is too far. American car companies... didn't think everything was going to go Hybrid/electrical that fast, and hence they will be hit the hardest.

I agree with Obama, I dont understand why you enjoy breathing crap into your lungs.. (or maybe you dont think it's a big problem yet, but what if it becomes a problem? By the time we know it, it'll be too late) The economy wasn't a big problem, and then all of a sudden we just lost 70k of jobs yesterday and it'll take another 4-5 years to even see a turn up. Japanese are leading it in the Auto industry in green emissions and I think California should lead the states in the United States (being that we are one of the hugest economies in the world, let alone a large chunk of the US).

This at least gives you a little more power to your vote, as it now pertains toward our own State officials voting on the bill and creating these bills.

California is going to go off the deep end with this, as they always do. And my point wasn't that people like poor fuel economy in their cars, so they will drive to other states to get cars with worse gas mileage. CA cars will be considerably more expensive, so it might be worth it to go elsewhere to purchase a vehicle. I still don't see how this will work.

i think you're missing something very important. japanese automakers already meet and BEAT the emissions rules that are in effect, and they'll continue along this path with newer vehicles.

does this mean that they'll charge more for cars because emissions are tighter, despite the fact that they've already taken those rules into account? not necessarily. i believe you are worrying for no reason.

also... one thing you are missing.

if a camry in nevada, oregon, arizona and california all have the same emissions standards, gas mileage, etc... why go out of state to buy something? yeah... spend a ton of hours driving out of state, spend tons on gas to go out of state to buy a car, then bring it into california and pay to have it registered NOT ONLY in the original state, but then transferred into california and then pay for the registration here in california.

now, ultimately, the choice is yours. buy a crappy american car that WILL get hit hard by the emissions standards (and pay all the lovely accompanying fees)... out of state or not... or buy an import that WILL NOT get hit hard by the emissions standards and go on about your suburban lifestyle with a white picket fence & 2.3 kids.

Build it anyway. Whatever plan comes to fruition is guaranteed to be a bureaucratic train wreck and there will be a way around it as always.
