Obama to let states set car emission standards
President Barack Obama is poised to let California and other states control their own car tailpipe emissions.
An official familiar with Obama's decision said the president will reveal the policy Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been publicly announced.
California and at least 13 other states want waivers from the federal Clean Air Act so that they can impose stiffer air pollution standards than the federal government.
The Bush administration denied the states that permission. Obama's move would empower the Environmental Protection Agency to reverse that conclusion.

read the fine print...
"The new president also said his administration would issue new fuel-efficiency requirements to cover 2011 model year vehicles."
basically, new vehicles are impacted, but OLDER vehicles are not. the majority of the impact would be for 2011 model year vehicles and later. this is simply a 'get ready for the change' plan...
so, dont worry too much. yeah, we'll ALL deal with tighter emissions rules, but the 2011+ vehciles will have it FAR worse than us...
beyond that, this is the same bill that Bush had put on the further back burner, as it would hurt the american auto makers.

i say this is bad, depending on how the states set their standards, the manufacturers will have to follow and this means more $$$ out of the manufaturer's money to meet possible 50 different standards.
