Good patches do exist... but not all things that plug holes in tires are created equal.

thats the same ones we use at our shop. they maintain your speed rating so you don't have to worry about a patch that might not hold up.

thanks everybody

I got it done at sears for $22 today (didn't feel like driving all the way to redwood city to america's tire just for the patch).....hope it will hold up well

Sidenote: The mall at el camino real (where the sears is) reopened, and it is actually pretty nice.

Just as a friendly warning, a lot of gas station repairs are the DIY type where you just put a gummy substance in the hole. If any legit tire company sees these, they will immediately deem your tire unsafe to drive on and will refuse to work on it and advise you to buy a new tire. Since these really don't seal anything except for where the hole is in the tire below your steelbelts, your steelbelts slowly start to rust with these types of patches.

And for that m3 article where he states "thick glue substance" that is actually a liquid rubber compound which is supposed to act like the rubber on the inside of your tire. Since if you don't patch it and seal it right dirt, water, and other debris can get into the part of your tire where the patch is and it'll be just as good as a gas station plug.

yeah never use plugs (installed from the outside), only patches (must remove tire from rim to patch).

the way thoes things work is by threading the plug through the inside. the flat part acts as a patch on the inside of the tire while the rubber "tail" fills in the hole that the nail left in the tread. it's one of the best solutions out there short of having to replace your tire.

The problem with plugs is that they are more of a temporary solution than a fix. A plug can fall out over time or under hard driving conditions, but a patch will last longer and be more durable.

heh, I know. If anyone has ever taken their tires to America's Tire Co. in Dublin during the past summer, then most likely it was done by me.

I was just stating how the guy said a "thick glue substance" is actually liquid rubber compound that seals the tire. I just wanted to warn people that the DIY is not acceptable to most tire companies and they will refuse to repair your tire.
