Try rotella t6 amazing stuff, I usually use napa golds or wix (same thing.)

Alright cool, alright ill try that on the next oil change. I decided to buy denso oil filter since i found it on a website for about $3 a can

 

Just as a warning, RT6 may be a little thick for your application. Notice most, if not all, who are recommending RT6 have a turbo. The main reason why people avoid M1 is due to it shearing down to too thin of an oil because of the heat from the turbo. The two main oils Subaru WRX owners use, RT6 and GC, is because they're thicker and are more resistant to shearing to too thin of an oil.

Don't get me wrong, I use RT6 in my WRX, but again it's a turbo application.

We're in California, you want to run something thicker anyways.

 

I'd also recommend Castrol Syntec 0w30 and Total Quartz Ineo 5w30. Both are also really good motor oils.

 

Wouldn't it be thicker only if i used something with a higher viscosity like 5w-40? Or Is the oil in general just thicker?

And i only lost a quart of oil in about 3500 miles, so i probably don't need a thicker oil

 

RT6 is a 5w-40 oil. And comparing oil viscosity between companies is about as useful as comparing tire sizes between companies. A 0w-30 German Castrol vs a 0w-30 Mobil 1 is a night and day difference. The GC is much closer to a 40 weight and the M1 is closer to a 20 weight, which is why people tend to avoid M1 and go with GC in Subarus. Heck, even M1 5w-30 is thinner than M1 0w-30.



By your logic, if I moved to an even hotter place, should I be running a 5w-50? You make it sound like it's constantly over 100 degrees in CA, and even then, it doesn't make a significant difference as the motor is producing most of the heat in the oil.

Look at these past weeks, it's hit around 30 if not lower in many areas in NorCal and SoCal. Engine wear is normally the worst on a cold start up because oil needs to heat up to be at operating temps and viscosity. Hence you don't want to run a thicker oil than needed in the car.

 

Yeah even my wife's civic on extended life Mobil 1 needed to be topped off regularly. Switched to regular synth Mobil 1, problem gone.

 

what about motul xcess? i love that stuff too just not ideal when i change my oil evrry 2 months
