they told me this because they see the effects of detonation in the countless engines they pull apart. so to prevent or ensure detonation not to happen, why not throw an extra dollar in your tank each fill-up. cheap insurance if you ask me. No matter what the gas prices, mid grade is always only $.10 more
even if you cant hear the detonation happening, im sure it happens in certain conditions, like if its hot out etc. no need to throw firecrackers in your cylinder before it hits TDC...sounds e$$pensive

If you are detonating (and you can't hear it) then the car's ECU is pulling timing to prevent it... which kills power.
Higher octane will reduce detonation so your ECU doesn't have to pull timing and thus lose power. Or in extreme conditions, cause damage.
However, if your model car (not just your individual car) detonates regularly at 87, then it wasn't meant for 87.
From the 09' Manual:

Almaden 76: Almaden/Foxworthy, San Jose
Woodside 76: 101 S, L Woodside, couple miles on your left
Sunoco 100 Octane - $6.299/gal San Jose, 6.599/gal Woodside
Here is the mix I use to make 91+ Octane for 14 gallons.
14 gal - 3.0 gal = 11 gal
11 gal * 91 oct = 1001
3.0 gal * 100 oct = 300
(1001 + 300) / 14 gal = 92.9 octane

I HAVE had bad tanks of gas...including one while I was on the dyno. The ECU was pulling 7-10 degrees of timing!! Ran through the tank and refilled, and all was normal. Luckily I had a good map
That is why I use Toulene. 1 gallon of 114 octane Toulene added with 11 gallons of 91 nets me 93 octane. I get it for about $7 a gallon, which is far cheaper than an unscheduled teardown and piston replacement. I have seen no detrimental effects.

Using the calculator that JesseB posted, that is an additional $.40 per gallon.
