Japan 8.8M quake + mega tsunami
Growing up in Hawaii, I have been evacuated for many 4-11 inch waves. It's always good to be prepared but I doubt we will see much more than a swell on our coast here. That being said, I have my Pup with me today in case my house floats away. People were going nuts out in Half Moon Bay this morning.

Had to pass through HWY 1 in Pacifica round 8:40am this morning to get to work in Berkeley. Roads were empty (normally there's light-medium traffic). Cops blocking roads leading to the beaches, but did not close HWY 1, obviously.
If in doubt, FLAT OUT

Got a hold of my friends that live in Shinjuku and they said that while everyone was really shaken, and stuff was mildly damaged from falling etc. they were all ok.
Sounds like most of the damage is to the north in the Sendai/Miyagi area.
So terrible. I am leaving in two 1/2 weeks to go to Tokyo. As of right now the trip is still on.

some pretty amazing pics here, kind of heartbreaking seeing that wave roll into those houses and building and knowing alot of people are about to drown

It was normal/solid around an hour and a half prior when I passed through from HMB to SF. My wife said they closed 1 at surfer's beach when she tried to leave. Waves were pounding in the cove south of the tunnel - looked pretty awesome.

the death toll will be in the 1000s once everything is cleared up. The surge was almost as high as a 7 story parking garage. Its pretty sad to see. A lot of my friends reside around Tokyo and they're just mainly sick of the aftershocks. Apparently the grounds been shaking practically every 30mins or something.

Quakes of that magnitude last 3-5minutes normally. Thats an eternity compared to the only quake (alum rock one) I've ever felt which lasted like 5 secs.
plays well with others
