People can hate all they want but you can't really surpass the ease of use of the apple products. I prefer not to use my laptop for taking notes in lectures because of the inability to make charts, and calc diagrams easily. This could possibly be the solution I'm looking.
Really what it comes down to is this: sure other companies can announce a similar product earlier, and for cheaper, but they are all just too hoaky to use and that's what differentiates apples high-priced products from the rest of the pack. Anyone else here have a (non iphone) touch screen cellphone? I do, and it drives me nuts how far inferior it is to the iphone interface. This same point is valid for ipod as well, which isn't even priced higher than it's competition.

I just got the HTC Hero, and it's one laggy sob. However, the multitasking, flash support, and call quality on this phone makes up for any "extra" features that aren't as vital as those on a phone. Though, I'm sure the Samsung Moment (866 mhz processor) and the Nexus One (1ghz processor) would eliminate the lagginess of the 500mhz processor of the Hero.
On the OP's topic though, maybe the next gen one will just be the iPad with wings?
I agree it's a slick little thing that will fill a niche for certain people. I can see that tablet PC's will have a big future. Jobs kept saying how much better this thing is over a netbook.. I just don't see that at all. A souped up eBook reader iTouch hybrid.. I see that.
I have a Dell Mini 10 I purchased to have a small lightweight system to use on vacations, travel and commuting. The funny thing is I realized 95% of what I do on my desktop is on the internet, which the Mini can handle perfectly. I was lucky to get one with an HD resolution screen, 1366 x 740 or something like that so there is lots of real estate on the 10.1 inch screen.. I'm still surprised how much I use it, my desktop was down with a failed hard drive for almost 2 months and I didn't even miss it.
For me, a 12 inch netbook would be perfect, maybe just a little more processing power for higher quality video, I'd be happy. And from what I hear that's exactly what the next gen ones will offer. A 15 inch laptop is just too big, too much weight, too much hassle to carry around to work or on vacation.

The real problem here is how much this iPad was hyped up.... I think many were expecting this to come with some super intel quad core voice command ultra processor but if that were the case I'm sure the price would be astronomical.... plus if you need all that processing power a laptop/desktop is a better solution imo.
That said, commence with the Apple bashing

So a device that has no word processor, no camera, no flash support, and no multitasking is the "future"? Yea, maybe in this thread.
What puts me off, but doesn't seem to ever deter Apple, is the cost. I can get a Netbook, which is not awsome, but good enough, for around $300 with wireless...what makes the iPad $900?
Maybe I just don't understand, like the iphone, which does media really well for a phone, it's lack bothers me more....

I like the idea, but what's the point of buying one if I already have an iPhone. Just seems like a waste. If there was a webcam, usb, that made it more like a laptop/notebook I could see myself purchasing it. $500 doesn't seem to steep, but what's the point when I already have an iPhone. For the bigger screen? Geez how much will that suck if I were to drop it and crack the screen like I just did with my old iPhone (which has been dropped in a glass of beer and still worked for a year).
For me, it could have been interesting if it ran OS-X instead of being a bloated iPhone. It doesn't look like it would have the horsepower to pull that off though.

Lol...
Yes - its all about what you need. Peoples needs change from one to the next, what works for you doesn't work for me, blah blah blah

i think the majority or people bashing this device are 19-20 yrs old and don't remember the original desk top computers or even laptops! Who says you need a traditional keyboard to type. The first computers were monsterous and slow, you have to start with a good idea and build on it.....i know it's asking a lot but have some patients and let this evolve!
^^^ No. The people bashing the iPad actually understand what a "computer" is supposed to do. The iPad is far from a computer/netbook. It is closer to an iPod touch than anything. It runs off the iphone OS and comes with no flash support, no camera, no video, no multitasking, no usb ports(or u can buy a 39 dollar adapter and plug 1 device in), no SD card reader or any memory format for that matter(of course there will be a 39 dollar adapter u can buy), and the back of the device is curved making typing with 2 hands a chore as it rocks back and forth.
