Avantbrowser (a neat tabbed browser replacement) has a built-in popup stopper. Google toolbar also works really well.

people are gullible/ignorant to the harsh ways of the computer world. My gf ALL THE TIME will click the wrong button when she gets a window that's like "YOU MUST CLICK ON YES & INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE". Then she realized she had a lot of spyware (i had previously told her about ad-aware), so she wanted to get rid of it ... but instead of isntalling 'ad-aware' ... installed "http://www.ada-ware.com/" .... which I am pretty sure is some more spyware.
I formated her computer for her one time, gave her a fresh start, updated everything, installed some anti-virus/anti-spyware software. A week later I go to use her computer & it's riddled iwth popups & more spyware.
My next move is to give her account no write privileges =)

I've never had a problem with this stuff. No spyware, no popups (since I started using Mozilla products). I had an excel virus once, but that came from work. Aside from that I never have a problem. I run spyware checking software every once in a while, but it never finds anything. Worst I've had is Gator or Banzai Buddy try to install when I load some random piece of shareware or something, but that's easy enough to tell is happening.
I'm dead serious, how do people get this stuff... I have to fix friends computers that open 16 windows the instant you look at IE, and have 13 different spy/adware programs running on boot... I literally have no idea how they do it.

MOZILLA is slightly better than netscape 7.1. NS 7.1 allows certain "commcercial" websites by default to pop up.
mozilla doesnt. plus everything there is open sourced. certain portions of NS isnt.
if you just want a browser (NS and MOZ is a suite of products: browser, email client, web page maker, irc chat); check out FIREBIRD, which is built on the MOZILLA trunk. it's small and compact so it runs in smaller memory space.

Just go to netscape and download the latest version. Then, go into your preferences and set to block all popups. Enjoy!

I think im going to reinstall win98...
Anyway, most of these problems started when I started looking for some Torrents of like Initial-D and Band of Brothers... Note to self: Dont try to find torrents via Google or yahoo
One of the Spyware programs was something called PGate... A total biatch, it hides itself in like two places so that if you try to delete one without the other it just reinstalls itself or something, and I pretty much had to go into the registry and delete anything remotely resembling it, and browse through my whole computer looking for anything out of the ordinary. Finally got rid of it though, hasnt come back (yet)... Spybot, Ad-aware and every other program couldnt even detect it.
I have the spyware pretty much gone, but im installing the google toolbar as I type this. This thread needs to be a sticky!

I've been using ad-aware and norton antivirus 2004 and i still can't get rid of some of my spyware. Norton ran and found 24 "threats" and was only able to fix half of them. So now i'm stuck with my homepage permanently at some ad website and it reverts to that every time i change it. Also, my girlfriend's computer has something wrong with it where even "msconfig" won't run. I might have to just go in there and manually change the registry but i don't want to F anything up... I'll try some of those programs u guys recommended...

Try the Bazooka program, its not an actual program that deletes stuff, but it tells you what is on your computer and did a better job than other ones at actually finding stuff for me, and then it gives you a link of how to specifically delete each individual spyware.
