I want a full-suspension too, but they're so pricey that I can't quite afford one, which is why I'm stuck with my POS hardtail (trust me, it started out as a POS, Acera componentry)
So I'm stuck with my hardtail for now. At least I have Shimano Deore components now. Good enough for anything I throw at it.
As for trail preference, dat singletrack. There's some casual, scenic beachside singletrack around the coastline where California State Route 92 and California State Route 1 meet up.

I want to learn about new trails, my riding buddy is in San Diego for summer

One of my favorite single tracks is at Fremont older.. My friends and I call it disney land because its a bit of everything. Easy to technical, long to sharp turns and the track it self goes on for about 0.5 miles into the base of the valley.

Fremont Older is the kind of place to go to for some quick singletrack riding IMO.

I wish... practically broke, but I would most certainly appreciate any way I can cheaply fix my bike's issues (rear derailleur is starting to get out of tune, and front derailleur on a totally-frayed cable).

This is the scenic, easygoing singletrack I was talking about. Great fun, just follow the singletrack on the cliff's edge

Trial and error my friend! The way I learned was riding dirt bikes(track/trails) for 9 years. It doesn't come to everyone!
