If somehow this did make it past the house or senate it would be challenged by the supreme court has a violation of the 1st amendment and it should be.

"Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003" AKA PATRIOT ACT 2

And a portion of it was snuck into a funding bill a few months ago.

How often do you here of unlawful search and siezure holding up in a court of law. Hell even Oj got off. Last time I checked in Berkley they still have a lot of freedom of speech. Last time I checked people were still able to participate in civil disobediance. Last time I checked it was illegal to smoke a j, but a helluva lot of people do it. Oh and man many conversation go on like that around the US without there door getting broken down. I mean come on. You can get Dorells book at Amazon and sites like eff.org, mother jones, all many other information sources exist. Oh and **** teh ACLU for supporting NAMBLA. If all my Civil Liberties are eroding away why do I have so much freedom to do and read what I want???????
To a certain extent yes, you are correct....and yes, you still have the freedoms that you had mentioned RIGHT NOW....but with all the pending new bills and laws and other "rules" that the government is considering imposing on us as citizens in order to preserve "National Security," you may NOT have those rights for very much longer....enjoy it while it lasts. For example, Yes, it is illegal to Smoke a J, just as it is illegal for someone under 21 to drink alcohol, or someone under 18 to buy cigarettes.....but is it really justification to have your citizenship revoked and sent to some isht hole to rot away while the government decides whether or not you are a Terrorist, or traffiking drugs as income for some terrorist group? After all, "buying drugs, supports terrorism," right? Wasnt that the argument a few months back....I recall seeing a commercial that stated something along the lines of: "If you buy drugs, you are funding terrorism." Buying a 10 sack of weed from your buddy to roll a J is HARDLY even worth the governments time, let alone justification to have you flagged as a threat to Nat'l Security IMO reguardless of the legality issue here, afterall its not like you are constantly traffiking 100's or even 10's of pounds across the borders, thats a different story.

As you had said, Yes, the gov't COULD use ANYTHING they hear while they were listening to your PRIVATE conversation to come to your residence and "search" or "seize" any "evidence" they had found...which includes arresting you if they see fit without due process, a warrant, or just cause. Furthermore....I am SURE you know that when a wire is tapped.....certain words are "flagged" and if one of those words is used in conversation, you could potentially be the target of a Search, reguardless of the fact that you were talking about your trip to Bear Valley....For example You say to your buddy, "Dude, I was BOMBING down the mountain, and I hit this phat jump.........etc." Well, the word BOMB, or BOMBING is flagged, now all of a sudden you are a potential terrorist......so yea....when you asked - "I mean are they going to use this to keep the disidents inline and if not gaffle them?" That is exactly what they will be doing. They dont like what they hear.....you win the free trip to the black list. I am not saying this will happen tomorrow.....but it is possible that it COULD happend within the next few years, and the way it looks with all these new bills that are still in the creation/approval stages, it is VERY POSSIBLE that we are headed in that exact direction.

I say that!

Besides, have you ever gotten upset because someone had been "eavesdropping" on one of your conversations when you were talking about something serious with your GF, or someother subject that you wished to keep behind closed doors?

I suppose that IS a possibility.......either that, or I am the one that can look past whats immediately in front of me and look a little further down the road so when the time comes I am PREPARED for whatever may happen....better to be safe than sorry.....but I guess not everyone shares that philosophy, so thats ok..... afterall, "Ignorance IS bliss." If I am wrong....what have I lost? nothing....I am not stopping my life...I am not going into paranoia mode and locking myself in my house, disconnecting anything that could potentially be used to spy on me, etc......I will continue living as I have been all along. No biggie, I just like to keep an eye on the world around me, and I know my rights....Unlike some ppl I like to look at ALL of the possibilities, and take into account that this MAY happen, and if it does....then I am not like....WHOA! Whats going on here?

Its all good if some people think I am paranoid...whatever....no skin off my back, you cant please everyone...that is one thing that makes America so great (for now), People are allowed to have different opinions <shrug>. Apparently WE have different ideas on where the country is going....that doesnt make you or I bad people, its just a difference of opinion.......

oh yea, and as for the "chickenlittle" comment............LOL j/p

either that or the Gov't forced him to say that.....but who knows.....

but that article DID say this:
"The Hawash case is not an isolated situation. I wrote recently about how Attorney General Ashcroft wants more power to snoop on the Internet, observing private conversations by installing secret microphones, spyware and keystroke loggers. Combine that with the broad powers that the Justice Department received under the 2001 Patriot Act, and you've got a situation that concentrates a tremendous amount of surveillance power in a small group of federal police and prosecutors."

I thought Hacking was ILLEGAL? Hmmmmm.....Spyware? Keystroke loggers? SECRET microphones? "observing PRIVATE conversations?" That sounds like some stuff we had been talking about a page or so ago.

it's not so hard to be a conspiracy theorist in these times, when the federal government is already so far-reaching and secretive.

Me sheepish hardly if I was I wouldn't be defending myself against two people at once. My point which is kinda getting lost is I look at the information that you guys are reading objectivly. So far the info I've seen is a misreprestaion of the facts. I looking into the wired article and there's no reference to the bill number that was passed which is suspect. Trust me I do look at what going on beyond propagana that's trying to manipulate me. Have your ever read the Patriot Act it beyond what people are telling you whats in it? I don't just swallow up what's being presented before me. Just because you guys feel really strongly about this information doesn't make it true and I have to see it fo myself, but since I disagree with you both I must be wrong??
