How do you get into firearms?
Well I'm asking seriously since I know quite a few gun enthusiasts are on this board. I've liked guns all my life from being interested in military history, etc. and now that I'm older and have the funds available I would like to purchase a firearm, learn how to use it, go to a shooting range, learn more about them in general.
So... what should a n00b like me do?

Yeah, You've Probably Never Heard Of Me.

well, you can start with a crippling insecurity about the size of your *****, that always helps. Or an irrational paranoia about a team of criminals invading your house someday that you will have to fend off(p.s. dont let the fact that your MUCH more likely to be hurt or killed by your own gun than anyone elses deter you from this)
shut up jeremy, guns kick ***
and yes my opinion isnt valid because of the following reasons
1. guns n roses is my favorite band
2. im listening to def leopard right now
3. hmm. i think the first two covered it

classy. i wont own guns for this reason also. BUT i have shot lotsa guns and its a lot of fun. my uncle owns like a ranch out in vacaville so he has a buncha guns: two AR15's, 12 gauge, sig 9mm, and a buncha other random old school rifles and revolvers. also a skeet shooting setup outside. "PULL!" BLAPBLAP... its good fun. i thought it was fun at first because its a lot of power and energy coming out of that little gun. now its just fun for the challenge, of course the power is still there. its similar to driving a really fast sports car for the first time. i think thats the only way i can explain it.

What happened to owning/doing things just because they are cool, isn't that why most of us own subarus? And why most people like cars in general? Cause damn near every guy I know likes cars, doubt very many like cars because they study mechanical engineering or is a car mechanic or a racing driver and just happen to have a genuine appreciation of the principles behind the thing.
Take a handgun safety course. You'll learn how to use and shoot various guns, learn CA laws and your rights, and get certified to purchase a sidearm. It's a good start to ask questions and fire different calibers.

hey but if I stuff it in my pants I'll look like I have a raging huge mega boner.
But on a side note....(I do not own a fire arm)
But I was raised around them. When I was a kid my mom had a 12 gauge under the bed cause we lived in the ghetto. Someone ended up breaking in while we were gone and stealin all the christmas presents and the 12 gauge.
Little later on we move out to the desert. We had a nice gun cabinet in the house. 2 oldschool ball style 6 shooters. a couple old school lever action 30/30's. couple shot guns. 22's. Stuff like that. I was tought to respect fire arms and taught how to properly care for them. Since then I've fired a bunch of different fire arms.
Purchasing a gun for the purpose of self defense...as per home invasion..is foolish.
But being into guns and shooting them is not a big deal. Take some classes. Spend some time at the range. Learn how to respect it. Teach those in your home how to respect it. Keep it unloaded and out of reach of children...LOCKED up.
The thing that makes them so hazerdous is that so many dumb asses just leave them lying around in shoe boxes, unlocked cabinets...etc. Leave them loaded. And don't teach their children how to handle them. People assume that if you can buy a gun you can handle a gun.
Stupid.
Go to a shooting range and rent a bunch of different guns to find out if you like shooting or not, and also to find out what kind of gun you like the best.Shooting is very fun but it can get expensive, not just the price of the gun but all the ammo.I will spend at about 40 bucks every time i go to the range for about 100 rounds and lane fees. Also check out the web for gun sites and do some good research.

Did a quick google, found http://www.bayprofs.org/ . That any good, or anyone want to recommend a gun safety course?
Thanks

That's a myth, my friend. It's a common line repeated endlessly by anti-gun folk and their ilk.
The Kellerman study has been debunked time and time again. Even Kellerman HIMSELF eventually disavowed his original results.
