Thats the way it is...old school cars are way louder then ours, but they don't mess with them, theres nothing you can really do about it, thats how some cops are.

and I thought it was ur dad that got the ticket

here is a link to the sema site that talks about the testing for exhaust noise in california.

I would take it to the smog ref and have it measured, that way you can show in court that his findings were bias

from the page linked above

Exhaust systems which meet smog requirements but are still too loud. Exhaust equipment that states it is, "Legal in all 50 states," refers to smog, not noise.

Note: New law (27150.2 VC) does not require law enforcement to use sound level meters to test for excessive noise. Citation is based on officer's judgment. Cited violators may have testing done at smog referee stations or may be directed by the court to have testing done. Vehicles in violation must be brought into compliance. A fine may also be imposed.
I am not sure, but I think that page is out of date compared to the new law that was talked about on the SEMA page.

pretty simple tho, go to a smog ref station, ask to be tested, and have a cert that shows your in compliance. If the cop is a real dick, just take the ticket, then show the judge that you are legal according to the smog ref.

the judge will have plenty of words for the officer for wasting his time

Actually, the law does not apply to motorcycles, just cars and trucks. I think it starts applying to motorcycles soon too though.

but the SEMA webpage also says that u can't get a certification of proof until u actually get pulled over and cited, THEN u can go get your car checked.

i understand u are mad now at cops, but if it weren't for them, u'd be raped over and over again and no one could save u, so cops are good if they are actually doing their job at important things.

found it, it's the second paragraph, here u go

The new law requires smog check stations that provide referee functions to perform the test. These referee stations will issue certificates of compliance for vehicles when tests of their exhaust systems demonstrate that they emit no more than 95-decibels, under Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) test procedure J1169. Only those vehicles that have received a citation for an exhaust noise violation will be permitted to submit their vehicle for the test.
