I had the opportunity for a good back to back test with the Tomei EL Headers/UP. This is an 06 STI with basic stage 2 mods and is even catted. The results are what I generally expect, but its nice to see it on the same car with nothing else changed. What did surprise me was absolutely no loss in spool.

This car has:

Cobb Catted TBE
Cobb SRI with box
DW850cc Injectors
Walbro
Hallman MBC
Custom Tune
Tomei EL Headers + UP Wrapped

Blue is before headers, red is after.

Thanks

And here is a 2008 Evo X. We don't tune a ton of EVO's, but they sure turn out nice when they come in .

TBE, Intake, Upgraded FMIC, 3-port boost solenoid tuned with Cobb AP:

Thanks

Ed do you guys use a mustang dyno?

I have an 06 sti protuned stage 2 with invidia catless DP and it made 275/300 at GST but my MPG is really bad, 15city/22hwy. I think its my tune, if i got my car tuned with you do you think you could pick up some power and get more mpg? The previous owner toldme the car was conservatively tuned if that makes a difference... Please pm or reply thanks!!

We use a Dynocom dyno which is calibrated to read just like a Mustang. Stock 06 STI makes about 215whp.

Your power numbers sound right on and the gas mileage is not too far off for the STI. I could likely improve response a bit and maybe get you another couple mpg.

Thanks

Wow, nice! Ed, what was the max boost? I assume that MBC setting was not changed, i.e. same boost for both tunes?

We just took apart an engine that severely failed a compression and leakdown test and found some very interesting issues. This is how NOT to assemble a Subaru engine....

First, while pulling the engine out of the car we found this:

Someone had ground down the corner of the block so much that they exposed most of the threads. This is where the block gets bolted to the transmission... no good! This is sometimes done for larger stock location turbos, but should NEVER be done to this degree!

Then we pulled the heads off and found a ridiculous amount of RTV sealer in them:

This is after most of it had already fallen off. There was so much RTV that it had plugged up the oil passages the feed the cam journals... again not good!

The the oil pump came off and we found an even more ridiculous amount of RTV clogging up the pump:

Finally we pulled the oil pan and found a ton of bearing material sitting at the bottom:

This is what happens when bearing clearances are not measured and bearings get overheated from lack of oil flow.

And this is what we find sitting in the oil pickup:

That's a big chunk of excess RTV that made its way to the oil pan from the heads! The little metal chunk you see there was a little extra surprise. After looking around, we found that it was actually a chunk of the block casting that had broken off when one of the case bolts was over torqued!

This was a pretty interesting tear down and a very good lesson in exactly what not to do when assembling a Subaru.
