Dont forget the roads are slickest when its started raining after being dry for awhile, the oil and crap floats ontop of the water. Or something like that.

Had to be driver error I've owned 2 sti's and have over 40k Miles on the RE70's and they hold there own in the Rain. Sucks to see such a new car get totalled. 1200 miles with a young driver someone should have warned him or a big speech given before the drive.

Clearly, driver error is the main culprit here. Having said that, let's not forget to make it definitively clear that the re070s aren't meant for aggressive wet driving, which is evident from its tread pattern. They will grip in the rain under certain road conditons, but not all. I've hydroplaned with them on the 24E past the tunnel; thankfully it was at a straight part and only happened for a moment. Now I'm running Advan Sports, which is just in time for the new downpours. So moral of the story, don't overdrive a car you can't handle fully, and don't go bansai with the re070s in the wet.

I'd say like everyone else is saying...1200 miles on the car...that means that if it was broken in correctly it only had 200 real miles on it. Not much time to get used to a car to a point where you can really push it....my opinion that's mistake number one. Going on a mass drive...in the rain...with a new car.

Second..the tires. Maybe the driver wasn't aware of how poor the RE070's do in the rain. I myself haven't had trouble with mine but I don't really push them that hard in the rain and I have 73000 miles behind the wheel of my car.

Third. It was raining. Not hard for a minor mistake like a lift then overcorrect to take you off the road.

Fourth. Maybe the guy was talking to his buddy and lost focus and just lost control.

Fifth. it was a group drive. Pretty much every single group drive I've been on has lost a car. Often noobs but not always. Not hard to get overconfident or get pushed to keep up with people or not hold back. Easy mistake to make...push to hard in just such a situation. I nearly stuffed my car going from about 130mph to 40mph on the first mt. hammy drive I went on.

sixth. **** happens.

give the guy a break. Lots of things can go wrong..and some did.

bro you took it the wrong way, i am not saying it wasnt simple inexperience or an innocent mistake, i am saying you see so many kids now days pushing their cars so hard without any experience, and like i said exceptions to every rule.. and i could totally be out of context here when i made my post. but it seems like most accidents are generally cause people want to show off. or push their car harder then it can handle with stock components. not saying this couldnt have been a case of normal happening accident. i should have been more clear. i am not clowning on the driver by any means. it just saddens me to hear about people wrecking their cars from pushing them so hard on roads they are not used to. again this might be out of context as i wasnt there.

true that. I know when the wrx first came out I was constantly hearing about people stacking their cars. I knew a guy personally that had one for like 2 weeks and stacked it doing the old lift midcorner.

I just get bummed out when I see people jumping down people's throats after they got into an accident like this...it'd be one thing if the guy was doing 100 rolled his car and killed someone..you know. Sorry if I took it the wrong way. I just see a lot of arrogant people that think they are perfect saying stuff like that. anyone can wreck at any given time. takes a split second.

imho, 99.9% of all crashes are operator error. As was stated earlier, that's why they're called accidents.
I'd bet money that the primary collision factor listed on the CHP report is "speed too fast for conditions".

We all make mistakes while driving. Sometimes those mistakes cause a crash.
Glad everyone is ok.

JR, don't let this keep you from the group drives, they're too much fun!
Just be smart, and keep a good following distance on the car ahead of you, just in case.
