Exclamation Car Issue/ Have question... :(

So my car (06 STi) started to make a little noise about two weeks ago. Everytime I turn the steering wheels the front end makes a "winding" sound and vibrates a bit specially on sharp turns..at a stop if i turn my wheel the rpms move up and down..and the rear end not sure if the (differantial) makes a sqeeky noise also when i turn my wheel at a dead stop...but what bothers me the most is the vibrating on the steering wheel when i turn, and the "winding" noise it makes, the winding noise is the loudest in the morning when the car is cold.. i checked my power steering fluid and its all good. Does anyone know of anything in regards to this?

The drive belt going to your power steering pump needs to be tightened.

you should be able to do it at home if your mechanically inclined if not you can learn.

Here is a link to a DIY and ill give you another link to were other DIYs are on removing all the belts.

Took me like 10 min. to replace the tensioner wheel that you'd only have to tighten, so yeah, you can do it yourself.

Did you have to replace your drivebelt? or just tighten it?

I only had to replace the pulley. The belt was fine, the bearings on the pulley just went out so I loosened it up, pulled it off, put the new one on and re-tightened.

Try just tightening it first. You might not need to replace anything.

What you're describing doesn't sound like the drivebelt, unless its a squealing like a slipping belt. Since its giving you vibration and making a wirring noise during turns.

I had the exact same thing and it got worse and worse despite the belt being tight and the fluid being full. When it got bad, I started leaking power steering fluid.

I found out through some research that some times the spring clamps along the power steering lines fatigue and end up not having enough clamping to keep air from getting in the system. In my case the clamp near the rack was so loose it was leaking, I pulled it off completely without compressing the clamp.

I replaced all of the clamps with hose clamps from autobone for like 10 bucks, I drained out all of the fluid from the reservoir filled it up with new stuff, lifted the front of the car up and turned it from left to right lock to lock (that's how you bleed it).

Here's an article:

then here's more than you ever wanted to know about power steering lol

Not being a turd, but I just raffed out roud when I read this part. On a serious note, if you don't wrench I'd ask a mechanic to be honest. Or you can get us some video so we can hear the specific sound you're talking about and everyone can deduct from there and have some fun helping you at the same time. Good luck!

I had a power steering belt issue that caused vibrations and chirping noises. Not on my subie but on my neon I think (or maybe the silvia, can't remember). Bottom line is that it could be, could not be a loose/worn out belt. Might as well give the belt a shot since its free and easy.

Yeah I'd start free and easy and go up. But if the belt is fine, go my route. Its hard to guess what the sounds are without hearing them.
