Clutch Issue Or Axle/Differential Issue?

Clutch Issue Or Axle/Differential Issue?
A while back, I swapped out the strut/spring assemblies from my car. Instead of doing it like a non-retard, i.e. fronts together, backs together, I tried doing the left side first, then the right side. Of course, leaving one side on the ground leaves NO clearance to get the strut assembly back in/aligned with the bolt holes properly, so I had to REALLY press down hard on the brake rotor/assembly to try to make room. After doing this for some time, and realizing it didn't work, I did it the proper way by doing the fronts together, then the rears together.
When I got everything bolted back up, I noticed that my when I tried to accelerate, my RPM's would go up, but there was no acceleration - almost like the tranny wasn't connected to the motor. Well, I was a bit freaked out, but I kept driving it around to block to see if I could better diagnose the problem. To my surprise, shortly afterward, everything went back to normal without me having to do anything.
Fast forward about 8 months. I am driving home last night and in first gear, notice my car makes a loud whirring noise and my RPM's go up, but the car goes nowhere. Similar issue in 2nd gear, although to a lesser degree. Once I'm above 20mph or so, 2nd gear works like normal. 3rd - 5th seem to be fine. It feels like a slipping clutch, but I replaced my clutch about 30k miles ago, and I don't beat on it, so I'd be pretty surprised if it turns out my clutch is toast. I also have not smelled anything like a burnt clutch yet. I have a suspicion it may be an axle/differential issue - I remember one member had a similar problem and it turned out that his rear axle had popped out of the rear differential, and it just needed to be popped back in.
I have no experience with axles/differentials/etc. Is this something I could check for easily? I am under the impression there is some kind of lock pin that holds the axle into the differential - maybe this came loose? Could one of my front axles become disconnected? Why would I only experience an issue accelerating at low speeds/in low gears, but not at higher speeds/higher gears?
I think the worst scenario would be that my tranny is toast, but I don't feel any grinding during shifts, so hopefully it's not a tranny issue.
Any thoughts?

My car's an '03. I am not sure about the fluid level in the diff - I take my car into a shop to change out the tranny fluid/diff fluid. I actually plan on taking my car into the shop in the morning to see if they can figure it out, but thought that I might be able to give them a heads up.

nope - wasn't an axle issue at all apparently; just a clutch that decided to crap out after 27k miles. When my mechanic pulled it out, he said he couldn't visibly see anything wrong with the disc or pressure plate, so it was more of a fluke i guess.
