Car dying between gears while decelerating..

Happened twice on my way home. Once from 3rd to neutral rolling to a stop light, and again, mid turn, between shifts from 4th to 3rd. Idle was around 5-600, which is only a hair less than normal if any.

I've been researching, and read to check a list of things including, oil, vacuum, EGR, PCV, IACV, and MAF sensor.

I drive a 2005 STi, I've located everything but the EGR, and IACV, and cant seem to find any write ups, or videos specific to my car.

SO my question here is can anyone guide me a little on how to find these 2 sensors on my car so I can check them before I put everything back together? PLease??

Thanks in advance, sorry for being a noob!

Do you have an atmospheric blow off valve?

Check engine light? Had the mass air flow sensor go bad in the outback recently. Was dying at idle and then cutting out while driving then going back to normal.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Might want to have a shop smoke test it. My car would randomly stall in neutral while rolling to a stop and I found my turbo inlet had slid off the turbo..

Second on vacuum lines. Also check fuel pressure.

iirc no IACV on the STi. Usually stalling is from a vacuum leak, smoke test is the easiest way to detect one.

As for DIY stuff without needing a shop. How old is your air filter? My friend's WRX stumbled a lot when his air filter got really really dirty. If there's a lot of crap in it, you can give it some good taps off the car, to clean it as a temporary fix. Also, grab some MAF cleaner from AutoZone or some other shop it's around $8. Clean the MAF really well, be very liberal with the spray and spray every nook and cranny, but don't touch any of the MAF sensor parts. After you clean it, reset the ECU, to allow relearning with a clean MAF. This really helped my idling.

Thanks for all the replies and advice!!

I did listen for leaks, its no smoke test, but no evident leaks.
Pulled out the air filter to make sure it was clean, and re secured the box.
Pulled the MAF and cleaned it thoroughly.
Topped off the oil.

Just test drove it for about 30 minutes and couldn't get it to die out no matter what I did, so for now all is well. The only thing I noticed that seemed necessary was the MAF sensor cleaning, it was clean on one side, and completely black on the other, haha.

Fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again!

Is your filter OEM? Or aftermarket? I know some companies oil their filter and after time the oil will start to get on your maf sensor. Happened to me too with a K&N filter. Switched to an hks foam panel filter and maf was never dirty!

It looks like a K&N but I'm not 100% on that, but I am sure it's not oiled, it's definitely dry.

Clean your throttle body if it happens again.

I pulled the throttle body looking for the IACV, it looked pretty clean but I will keep that in mind, thanks!
