Bay area insurance rates: 2.5i vs WRX vs STI

Has anyone priced insurance over these three models?

I'm curious to know how the price jumps for each model

well Ive got an STi with a kind of a spotty record and I pay 150 a month. couple of tickets and an accident. Ive got full coverage and uninsured motorist and rental car coverage. I theirs way more to it then just modles though. your record and the amount of coverage you want has a lot to do with it.

Get quotes from insurance companies. Difference between us and you is pretty much night and day. Also, rates are by neighborhood, not for the whole bay area.

The differences between car models are probably not enough to matter. Think: are you really willing to get a totally different model car just because the insurance is a little more for what you really want?

Saw this post on nasioc:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...rance+2+5i+wrx

Six-month premium:
09 Forester XT $532 (currently wife's car)

Other new cars I might like to own (compared to 09 FXT cost):
08 Impreza 2.5i...(-$47)
08 Pontiac G8 GT...(-$27)
08 WRX...(+$59)
08 BMW 335xi...(+$74)
09 Chev Corvette Z06...(+$99)
09 Dodge Viper...(+$407)
08 Honda S2000...(+$427)
08 STi...(+$497)
08 EVO...(+$611)
08 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (+$808)

I was guessing that it would be maybe $200 more expensive ($300 tops) every 6-months, not $500.

I am interested in knowing how much cheaper the 2.5i rate is too (besides the one data point above)

Why not just go to an insurance website and plug in your info with the different models?

My insurance changed just because I moved to another zip code. It's based on your record, car and location where it will be parked at night...

My first suggestion is to go under your parents umbrella insurance. Chances are they have been with the same company for a while. I got my yearly insurance for about 600 less than it would have been if I had been on my own. The insurance agent actually suggested I go that way.

I bought my 2010 wrx last january and when I was going price hunting for insurance, my average quote was right around 1800 a year. I called about 7-8 different companies for this as well.

Another tidbit of info as well, almost all the companies were charging nominally more for the 2.5i premium than for the wrx base. I found that odd and amusing.

I tried this... they wouldn't give more than one quote.

But I'm gonna call my agent to ask.

Easiest way to get an idea on what a particular car will cost you is to just go to eurance. NOTE, due to my personal experience, I would never buy their coverage. Price is pretty similar across most "performance" cars is pretty similar. It all depends on the area's insurance losses on the vehicle, and the class the vehicle falls into. Back when I was living with my parents the Mustang v6/gt/cobra, camaro, civic, rsx, wrx, sti, legacy GT, evo, m3, 330ci were all the SAME cost. Ultimately went with the GTO because it falls into a luxury category which made the insurance less than most other stuff. On my insurance the 05 GTO was $80/mo where the 05 92-x (the ins co knows its just a wrx wagon) is $100/mo. I drive the GTO so little that I went to an agreed value collector's car insurance that is ~$300/yr.

If you have a clean record I highly recommend Wawanesa. They were half the price of anyone else last time I renewed.

Pulled these from esurance just now all 2005 m/y
monthly In S.F., 26y/o M clean record 100/300 BI 50 PD $500 deductible comp& collision
wrx $168
sti $167
Impreza $128
Stang GT $167
Stang v6 $150
Rsx typ s $161
Rsx $152
CTS-V $145
CTS $104
A4 2.0T $147
S4 $212 (always blow all other perf cars out of the water for ins costs)
330ci $178
M3 $159
92 aero $118
92 linear $104
Cooper $137
Cooper s $152
Lancer Evo$155
Lancer $143

Looks like they've slightly adjusted the difference between performance and base models of the same car since I last shopped rates. But the difference is still negligible for most. Like I said depends mostly on model's history, and class.

I 2nd this -- when I got my 09 wrx, I called my parent's insurance agent (as this was the first car I had to get my own insurance for) and he put both my name as well as my parents name on the insurance plan (so I could get all of the same discounts my parents have). With that being said, I'm paying $425/6 months
