I was wondering if any of you guys/ladies knew if it is illegal to get insurance under a different address from where you actually live. The only reason I ask is I'll be moving into the oakland area soon and the rate is much higher then what I'm paying now due to the fact that oakland has a higher crime rate. So in an effort to save cash I was going to use a family members address instead. It sounds illegal but maybe there is a loop hole?

This sort of question falls under the:
Should I go catless? - type.
You know it's wrong. You know there's a steep penalty, but many probably don't get caught.
The 1 time you NEED your insurance company to back you: Ie 6 car accident, 3 hospitalized, and it ALL YOUR FAULT...do you really want your insurance company to say, sorry, but you defrauded us on your policy and purjured yourself on the contract.
THAT's when your SOL...pretty much for the rest of your life.

Only way you can do it is if you indicate that the car is "garaged" at that location. Lot's of people do it, but no one ever knows if that is true.

Yes, if you intentionally lie to the company, that's misrepresentation and they can deny your coverage.
Auto policies will ask you for your mailing address and a garaging location if it is different. It is not uncommon for there to be different addresses like a parent is receiving the mail for the children that are away at school.

my friend got a speeding ticket out by his parents house and he had just moved into the city 10 miles away, he was stupid and when the cop asked if the address was current said no, i just moved- doh, he deserved that part of the ticket but he was only doing 45 in a 45 in the cuts....
soooo I would say that it was garaged at the parents house, especially cuz his name is not on his apartment, his dads name is. He could just say he goes back and forth all the time. But his gf's cousin is their insurance agent and according to their policy, he is a father of 3 or something like that... so who knows what they really know about the guy. lol his policy is whack

Matt is good people. Just very against breaking the law.
He does like to break tape drives though.

Nah I wasn't trying to be insulting to him McDrama I just thought he was from past posts. Turns out Esurance has the lowest rate just slightly higher than what I'm paying now for the same coverage. Does anyone here have any good or bad things to say about them?
