Accessport vs Open Source Protune

So not sure the best place to post this so I will here. What is the "better" way to go? As of now I have a 2011 wrx, with catless dp, cobb intake, and perrin exhaust, and the accessport. A few buddies have been telling me to sell the ap and get a protune. So what do you think is the better option? I don't use the accessport for anything it just sits in my glove box so I was thinking sell it and use the money to get it protuned at eq (if i remember correctly gst doesnt do open source). I have plans in the future to upgrade the turbo along with injectors yada yada but that won't be for a few years when I have some real cash flowing in. As of now its just going to stay stage 2 with maybe a tmic in a few months.

so please give your opinions and which you think i should do, if you don't have anything nice to say please go somewhere else. thanks for your help

I like having the AP just for the features; code reader etc. Why not go with torque online tunes?

I prefer the Opensource simply because it gives you a more universal ecuflasher rather than having to stick with AP tunes. Plus you can get maps from just about anywhere. Just have to ensure that whoever created the map doesnt have it locked or else another tuner cant access the map for protuning. Plus, opensource gives you the capabilities to disable check engine codes such as tgv's for when you do deletes. AP has that as well.....but OS is alot cheaper.

TP gives a lot of usable power for daily driving while still keeping all the parameters safe to be called a OTS map. I know its time consuming but doing like 100 or so logs Eric can really dial in your car. Yes Ed can get you more power but with more power comes more risk. Personally I'd wait till you have everything you ever plan to install on the car, if you are done performance wise after TBE and intake I'd get pro-tune. Also keep in mind Ed doesn't open source tune our cars anymore he is strictly accessport these days. I tried to get him to open source tune my car from the start. TP does do open source tunes though so you could sell your ap and run his tunes still if you need cash.

Maybe try out stage 3 on my car and then see if it'll hold you over until you do the big stuff? I see pretty consistent numbers on Ed's low reading dyno with 09+ WRX/STi's with 280whp/300tq which is awesome for 91. TP Stage 3 map I put down 264/277 while being on the ultra safe side (rich) so there is power to be made but not enough of a difference IMO to rush a pro-tune before I have all my parts on. I rather do it all once.

A protune is specifically a tune using an Accessport. There is no such thing as an OS protune.

That being said it pretty much comes down to budget and what your chosen tuner is most comfortable tuning you with. I have an AP that's nothing but a paperweight to me, but my tuner does not use OS.

You already have the ap... keep it. Going opensource is pointless for you. If you were on a budget and you weren't planning on touching your car again... os. If you have the money for the ap... you have one... ap is better.

You can have multiple maps. We have quality proven tuners. You can check and delete codes. Monitor your engine stats. Etc etc.

Keep the ap. When you get the tmic go get a protune.

OP Did no one esplain to joo that you can get a tune written speciffically for your car and have it loaded onto your AP????

I like mine for the functionality when I get bored, or the random times I drop it off somewhere to get washed and dont want the valet driving it like an idiot so I put the valet tune in there.

exactly. Put a map on there that limits it at 4k or something.

This.

I still do OS tuning for models up to 2007, but for the 08+ years the Cobb software is much better than the OS tools. I would recommend keeping the AP and getting a good custom tune.

Thanks

The way to do this is not to choose the software.

You choose the tuner and ask them what they prefer. If you bring something to a tuner that they'll tune, but don't like using, there's usually a reason for it. If you ask them what they prefer, and choose that, then chances are that you will get a better overall tune.

It's like people in the engine management forums asking if they should go with a Vipec or Hydra or AEM or whatever. Ack Basswards. Ask your tuner, not the internet. You definitely don't want to show up to your chosen tuner's shop to make an appointment to tune a Hydra without first finding out if he's one of the 3 tuners who actually likes tuning Hydras.
