well the guy at Carlsen that tore it down said that the whole tranny is "hammered". but whats wierd is, that every gear was working except 2nd when id disengage the clutch, and now they gotta wait for some field guy to come check if its gonna be covered. im praying for the best so i can get on the road faster and learn from this.

UPDATE:
well, the subaru "field rep" took a look at the tranny and said it wont be covered under warranty. there was really nothing i could dispute fmro that point. i even went ahead and called the main subaru manager in the east coast and he said it cannot be covered and it's best to just buy a new tranny from them for $4800.oo. i really have no choice but to go with that.

does anyone know, if i do go ahead and replace my tranny with them, will my transmission still be warrantied or will it not be warrantied anymore? because if its not, im just gonna go ahead and upgrade to something stronger like cyro gears or an sti tranny.

I know this for a fact. I became a Subaru-certified service advisor for the year 2004, and I very highly doubt that SOA would make such a 180-degree policy change since then, considering that the quality and popularity of their cars has been rising at a steady rate.

FYI, if you buy the new genuine Subaru transaxle, it will only have a warranty of something like 12 months/12,000 miles (check with the Subaru dealer parts dept. manager, he will know for sure), NOT the remainder of the new car limited warranty . If you buy anything else to replace your fragged unit, it will have no warranty at all, but should not void the warranty on anything else on the car unless other parts had to be replaced or modified to make the trans swap work.

If you have any doubts at all about anything I have written, get a hold of the guy who gave you the thumbs down on your trans rebuild; he'll set you straight. Though I don't own a warranty coverage policy manual for Subaru, I have the Rainman-esque ability to memorize automotive trivia!

so basically, if i go ahead and have them replace it with a brand spankin new one, i stil wont have the regular warranty i had before it broke? and do you happen to know if i will get to keep my messed up tranny?

It was my understanding at the time I was a service advisor, that if you broke something and the damage was considered unwarrantable, then the replacement part would NOT fall under the new car limited warranty. You only got the 12/12, as if the part had been replaced after the vehicle was completely out of warranty.

Talk to the SOA field rep, he'll tell you what's up. And make sure before you sign on the dotted line exactly what the warranty is on the replacement unit.

With the second question; yes you can keep your busted-up trans, it belongs to you since they wouldn't pay for it to be fixed.

Stick to your guns and deny it if they try and say it happened cuz you were beating the hell out of it.

haha good luck with that

my wrx did the samething in second gear when i was coming down and at an angle out of a steep parking lot exit and the gear went out and i had to pay for my new tranny after fighting subaru with a lawyer for 4 months (my car had 150 or so miles on it)

Would it be cheaper to have the tranny rebuilt? What would be the warrenty on it then? I had problems a while ago with the tranny in my Honda, had it rebuilt by the dealer and it was cheaper than a new one.

Keep in mind, if the clutch is FUBAR'd again, you're probably screwed. Good luck! :sadwavey:

auto service records are public record...the other dealership would just have to search for prior work history or call the dealership in which it was purchased or worked on last.

It's far better to NOT lie to dealerships and just be honest with them. You start jerking them around and you'll loose any trust and relationship you have with them and they won't do **** for you.

They fixed it last time...take it back and see what's up.

Either you have something wrong they didn't catch last time or you need to learn how to drive.

The new car limited warranty still would not apply. The parts would typically be warrantied for 12mo/12,000mi, and the warranty on labor would be whatever the particular dealer in question is confident enough to stand behind.

Umm, the SOA field rep already shot-down his warranty claim.

Now we're looking to get the car fixed on a customer-pay basis.
