I've been using Mobil-1 since about 6000 miles on my 04 WRX and have never had any issues. But the local stores around me just started carrying royal purple and the price is fairly close. Anyone think one is inherently better than the other?

I have found Royal Purple to taste better when making a 'Dirty Martini'! Maybe it's just the color that makes it yummier!

~ I have used both in my cars in the past and presently. I haven't lost an engine while running either to wear items (valves/cranks and the likes) before 100K yet.

So, take your pick. My MBZ recommends Mobil 1 and I run Royal Purple in the Suby! ~

 

I use Mobil 1 in my 04 WRX and I never had a problem
useing it.I would keep useing Mobil 1 for sure it's great stuff.

 

I didn't mention I'm in New Jersey so I see my fair share of both weather extremes. Is one better for summer and one better for winter. Or are they on such a close level it's realy just a matter of preference?

One is Sprite and the other is 7Up. Both are good and do basically the same thing. Remember that the advantages of a synthetic are:

1) Higher resistance to thermal breakdown - good for high temps
2) Improved viscosity at low temperatures - good for cold starts
3) Higher level of purity - cleaner overall
4) Reduced friction - more power and better fuel economy.

While one may have "higher specs" than the other in some of the above categories, I am fairly confident that both perform equally well within the typical operating parameters of a typical engine.

On a personal note, I prefer Royal Purple because I have heard VERY good things about it.

 

Just as a casual observation, Royal Purple of the same weight seems to pour easier than Mobil1 at room temperature. That could mean that it has a lower viscosity, which explains their horsepower claims. However, I'd be wary of the level of protection it provides.

This is just anecdotal evidence, but I used to use Mobil1 in my previous car without any issues, but after I switched to Royal Purple for one oil change, I found some metal bits on my magnetic drain plug. The biggest piece was about 1.5mm across; I haven't used Royal Purple since.

i switch between royal purple and mobile 1 every few oil changed. I dont feel any noticable difference.

 

Tomato Tomato. Simply put either is better than a $0.79 store brand.

Although it is well debated about real Group IV oils and hydrocracked (modified) Group III's.

I don't remember if Royal Purple was a lower grade, but Castrol Syntec was.

 

just a thing to think about who has been making oil based products for cars longer and who has a higher r&d budget to do so. i would just think of that when comparing the two.

 

Okay here is my 2 cents for what its worth. My car, 04 WRX with mods has consistenly burned 1 qt of oil per 1k miles since I bought the car new. Went to synthetic around 7k and I have used all brands including Mobil 1. All brands of synthetic tried still burned 1 qt per 1k miles.

Here is the fun part. 2 oil changes ago I switched to Royal Purple since I started carrying the stuff in my shop. Within 2 days I re-checked the oil level and was down 2 qts. WTF? Well, I topped her off and went the remaining time and mileage to 3k without buring 1 drop. I just changed the oil again about 2 weeks ago and have not lost a drop.

I think I will have some very conclusive evidence assuming I make it through this oil change cycle with no loss but as of right now I am very amazed at the results. Screw performance gains, etc. if this stuff can stop oil loss that is some serious shXX.

I'd go with Royal Purple.. Where i live royal purple is like 2 bucks more a quart over mobile 1.
Iv'e done about 4 oil changes with mobile 1, and cant really talk **** about em.. but royal purple just seems to be better.. I dont know if it's the extra money that makes it seem better, but i gave my boy a ride after i put the purple in and he said it skooted hard..
You know that feeling after u wash ur car and drive it.. how it seems like its flawless...

I used a mineral based oil on a 3K cam break in (who knows why?). Dumped the bad and put in the good (Royal Purple) and even my Subie Tech noticed the difference! I'm telling ya 'snake oil' at it's finest! The thing pulls harder and revs faster then with Castrol 30wt, no doubts about it. Good stuff...
