you can probably buy 17s that are 10-12 inches wide or wider. they won't fit on any Subaru that i know of (short of the Cusco JGTC car...) though.

the widest 17s that will fit a stock, or even lightly modified Subaru are in the 8.5"-9" range. i'm running 17x8.5" Gramlights, with 225/45 tires. to go wider on the tires, you'll need coilovers and camber settings to keep the tire from rubbing, mostly in the rear.

yeah, there are some advantages. if you're running coilovers (you need them to get enough space in the wheel well) you can run up to a 245/45/17 for more grip. even with a 225, the wider the rim, the more stretched out the tire is on the rim, resulting in a wider contact patch vs. a narrower wheel with the same tire.

17x7.5 tends to be the most popular application for a good balance between ease of fitment, performance, and lightweightiness (is this even a real word? ). However, it's not exactly the widest you could go...

yeah, but my GramLights are lighter than the stock 16's *with* SO-3s mounted.

[bold]nic3krnnamja83[/bold]: go read the sticky in the wheels and tires section about reading tire sidewalls and sizes, all should become clear then.

That's why I'm so damn jealous of you and your wheels!
What I meant by comment was that 17x7.5 in general meets those stipulations
