road characteristics and wheel/tire sizes
Thanks to Tire Rack, for making excellent info available in this forum.
I have an '03 WRX Sedan with stock 16" wheels and tires. I'm planning now for tire replacement and maybe wheel changes too.
I drive 20-25K yearly, commuting 50 minutes per day on a freeway that allows me to travel all the way at the speed limit. I want an all-weather tire that is excellent in rain, with excellent dry traction, too. No, I don't want a tire that does everything perfectly... I rarely travel in snow, mud or dirt. I like driving fast and do it often. I've driven on performance tires for 13 years now, and usually run them at the highest PSI I can get consistant with even tread wear and good traction. I like a stiff, but sticky ride.
I live in the Sacramento area and make weekly trips to my boat on the Delta, where narrow, poorly-maintained paved levee roads demand good cornering and resistance to unavoidable potholes. Sometimes, you just have to choose between hitting a pothole or doing a head-on with another car or taking a dive into the river. The levee roads kill lots of people every year, but that's another story...
But, I do want to maximize my tires and wheels for the kind of driving I do.
Doubt that I will ever lower the car, I want a roadable suspension.
My guess is the 16" wheel is best for the kind of road driving I do. They are light and strong. Is there a 17" or 18" alternative that sounds better to you? I want to go as wide as I can, too. Does that mean 225's? What are some tires that you would recommend?
Love the way my WRX climbs up gravel to the top of a levee!
