Found out the hard way...
I found out the hard way that the Pirelli P6000 summer radials that came on my rex are useless in the snow. I had been putting off buying a set of all-season tires until after x-mas. After several close calls, I managed to slide backwards down a steep hill and take a chunk out of one of my P1's.
Oh but wait it gets better. I fork over the loot to a local tire chain for (4) skins and an alignment today. When I get my car back all (4) of my wheels are gouged around the lip. They look like 12" LP's for christs sake. The good thing is I work in the the collision business and we have a guy who can repair just about any wheel. The tire chain offered to pay for all four wheels to be redone.
I could be pissed but all things considered it could be a lot worse. I guess the moral of the story is don't try to drive in the snow with summer only tires. They are called summer only tires for a reason.

Well I got my wheels re-done and they look great. I wound up getting Toyo Proxes 4's. They have decent dry grip and are a marked impovement in the snow. I was going to go with Pirellis again (P zero Nero) but I got the Toyo's for $96/tire. I noticed that they are much quieter and give a more comfortable ride than the Pirelli's I had. The Pirellis would grab at every road imperfection and keep you fighting with the wheel.
I have to say despite the above mentioned gripes the Pirellis were one of the stickiest tire's I have ever encountered. For dry pavement it would be tough to find a grippier tire for everyday (well almost everyday) use.
