do I need a new spare when I upgrade?

Tumble,

You'll be fine with the OE donut. Subaru knows that there will be a slightly different diameter when running the spare, and it can be used with no problem to "limp" to a service station for repair.

The OD of your 17s won't be 'exactly' the same as your 16s and neither will be 'excatly' the same as your spare. We're talking millimeters here - so the difference is neglegible. Your three differentials are highly capable of compensating for the small differences in tire diameter;

When you get a flat, put on the spare and get to any store that services tires to see if it can be safely patched. You could get a new tire there or you could drive with the patched tire.
