235/45/17

O.k...

So most everything I've read says to run 235/45/17 if you're going to 235's.

I've talked with a few people now that are running 235/40/17.

It seems there are FAR more tires available at the 40 series size and due to that fact they're easier to find on sale or for better pricing. So my question is... is it bad to run the 40 series or even say just not as good as running the 45?

I ask this because of what I've read/know and what I see/hear. And that I need to get some new tires ASAP.

I run the 235/40/17 probably because it is a closer diameter to the stock tire. For auto-x, I think most of us in class run 235/40/17's.

I chose the 245/40-17 RT-615s because of the availability/Price and they were lighter when I put them on my RPF1s
you should be fine

Are you sure RT-615 is available in 245/40-17?! Not according to Falken's website.

I believe 235/40-17 is better for WRX & 235/45-17 is better for STi

Some tires run wider (e.g. Advan Neova AD07, & Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec) than others... I just got Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec in 235/40-17 which is wider than my current Potenza S-03 PP in 245/40-17!!!

I'm looking at toyo proxe 4's or a similar all season tire. I run to the snow quite often. So unless I can come up on some winter tires I won't be going strait summer tires on my car.

As mentioned above 40's on an 18 inch rim are the closest to stock diameter so that will help with fitment issues but the 45's may give you a little better ride and run a little quieter.

40 series is correct on 18's. We're talking about 17's thought. Hence 235/45/17 not 235/40/18.

Tire rack recommends 45 series but it seems a lot of folks run 40 series at the 235 width on 17's. Not really concerned about ride quality. I just want what's right for the drive line.

I run a pretty rigid suspension set up so 40 to 45 doesn't make much difference to me. I'm currently running 225/45/17's but I can fit 235's on my car so I figure why no.

If I had 8 inch wheels I'd go 245/40/17 but I don't. I'm running 7.5 inch wheels with a +53 offset.

Interested in my winter set?

Since your wheel is 7.5", I'd go w/ 235/40 or even 225/45, IMO.

I was going to get Sumitomo HTR Z III, but I end up getting Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.

I'd be very interested but I can't afford two sets of tires right now. Can't even afford one actually....haaa.

as was mentioned earlier, some tire treads are wider than other tires in the same size. i believe that toyos often are narrower, so you can probably go wider with them.
