Michelin's new airless tire
Dude, no more slashed tires
But seriously, if they can offer better ride comfort and handling stability, then why not switch? Kinda scary looking though, how those little spokes deform under weight...

I don't think it will be the new bling thing, there is a distinct chance that this concept could become the norm. I think this tire shown is built without sidewalls just to showcase the construction, and sidewalls will be added for production versions. Imagine having dried up mud or snow stuck in there, it will unbalance the tire badly and give unneccesary vibrations
just for those that say it's "ugly" looking. These are just what they are testing and showing people. WHen they actually produce those, they are said to have sidewalls on them just like a regular tire wouild.

hey if they work well then who cares what they look like (except if they come with neons < gh3y) with side walls the would look normal

I don't see these succeeding as performance tires for one key reason -- you lose the ability to change the tire's handling and traction characteristics by varing air pressure. My Goodyear F1-GS D3's change radically in character with the addition or reduction of PSI by a few lbs or so; I like them super-hard (38 PSI front) for highway commutes and much softer (32 in front) for trips in the hills or light off-roading. I suppose a true race team could stock multiple "pressure" versions of these tires and swap them to match conditions, but the tire type, use and swap rules are so tight in most official racing venues and categories that the adoption of the "tweel" might be very slow.
However, if they can make it look just like a normal tire, the advantages are obvious; certainly a better solution than run-flat tires that just have a big plastic ring inside the tire body and can only be driven on at 30MPH after a flat.

blah blah blah,....but can they drift!!??
seriously i still fail to see the physics of it but maybe its just me. from the looks, it will make a great dry condition tire. but what about rain or snow? i would imagine that you would have to put some sort of tread to channel water and dig through snow? you can't exactly just put cletes on them.
