We had a beautiful 08 STI come in that we built up about a month ago. The owner destroyed the original engine on another shop's tune. We built the engine, added a couple mods, and now the car is running strong and smooth at 318whp

How many miles were on the OEM engine when it failed?
How many miles of total miles were on the ****ty tune?
What component(s) failed?

Approximately 15k on the stock engine, last 4k on the tune. Car started consuming oil and smoking, customer was told his turbo was blown, replaced turbo, eventually developed nasty rod knock. Ended up having 2 cracked pistons and 3 spun rod bearings.

Of course it wasn't necessarily a direct factor of the tune. Could be bad gass, poor maintenance, or just crap luck. It's generally tough to accurately pin point the exact reason for an engine failure. We can only theorize in the end.

That sucks.
We've heard of a shop telling a customer that the oil consumption on a fresh rebuild was due to turbo failure..two or three turbos later...the engine was the culprit.

Hmm. 2-3 turbos? That sucks. Do you know if any diagnostic testing was performed on the engine prior to the turbo swap attempts? If so, did the results show any signs of the engine being the problem? It's usually pretty obvious if the motor is causing oil consumption once you do a compression/leakdown test. Sometimes, however, a problem may be much more obscure and not as easy to detect.

I know we've personally had a single engine (out of the many that we've built) that consumed oil and everything checked out ok on the surface. We ended up tearing the motor down, inspecting, and rebuilding it to the same specs we use on all our other blocks and in the end the problem persisted. Our machine shop was out of ideas and we're currently brain storming on a possible solution. We will likely try swapping to a different shortblock entirely, but I'm not convinced that this will solve the problem either.

The kicker is that this is literally the only engine we've had this problem with and it's built and spec'd like all our other engines that don't burn a single drop of oil. It seems that sometimes you can run into a car/issue that is not as easy to fix as one might think.

The funny part about this is that I've seen built engines from other shops that have consumed at least this much oil or more and the customers are simply told that "built motors consume oil, it's supposed to do that" and are sent on their way. This kind of statement really gets to me as there is no good reason for a built engine to consume any more oil than a healthy stock engine. Admitting there's a problem is the first step to recovery .

It's always best to leave a message if we don't pick up. I'm usually running around or tuning a car but I almost always return all voicemail the same day.

I just checked my PM's and I don't see one from you for some reason. Please re-send it or give us a call tomorrow.

Thanks
-- Ed
