The fact that the film breaks down stereotypes makes it more compelling.
And even if they did this to "promote ticket sales", what film doesn't? Producers look at facets of life that others would be interested in seeing on the big screen, invest oodles of cash to give the idea wings, and then profit from their investment.

Last 5 years for example I liked most of these movies and the Winners every year were good movies. (Although I didn't really like Chicago, it was alright)
American Beauty is a great movie, along with Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, LOTR 3 and Million Dollar Baby. All good movies IMO.
1999
"AMERICAN BEAUTY", "The Cider House Rules", "The Green Mile", "The Insider", "The Sixth Sense"
2000
GLADIATOR," "Chocolat," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Erin Brockovich," "Traffic"
2001
"A BEAUTIFUL MIND," "Gosford Park," "In the Bedroom," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Moulin Rouge"
2002
"CHICAGO," "Gangs of New York," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "The Pianist"
2003
"THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING," "Lost In Translation," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Mystic River," "Seabiscuit"
2004
"MILLION DOLLAR BABY," "The Aviator," "Finding Neverland," "Ray," "Sideways"
If Brokeback wins an Oscar maybe I will see it and just close my eyes through the naughty parts? LOL
