More Foot Baths for Muslims

Why not just build a ****ing mosque with tax dollars.

DEARBORN -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn plans to spend $25,000 for foot-washing stations, making it easier for Muslim students to practice their religion but sparking questions about the separation of church and state.

The university claims the stations are needed to accommodate Muslim students, who must ritually wash their bodies -- including the feet -- up to five times each day before prayers. But critics hit conservative blogs and radio airwaves Monday to argue public money shouldn't cover the cost.

"Technically, they've got a problem, because it's public money they're using to pay for this," said Hal Downs, president of the Michigan chapter of Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

"It's one of those issues that we're going to be facing more and more in this community."

I hope the U of M gets beat down in court. Tax dollars spent on religious crap is rediculous, and the fact that a so called institution of higher learning is doing it...wow...

Now, just to clear the air, I don't support any tax monies being spent on any religious project/activities/etc.

In the book exchange thread I posted a title that everybody who posts in this forum frequently should read called 'Religious Litercay.' I bring it up because it's where I learned that the vast majority of "institutes of higher learning" were founded to train clergymen, especially ones dating to the 19th century or earlier. Point is, you're absolutely right- it's wrong of Americans to think Universities are "religion-free zones." What the first amendment says is that our government and, by extension publically funded entities such as schools, cannot show favoritism to one particular set of beliefs. All schools have been reapeatedly isntructed and encouraged by the Supreme Court to continue educating everyone about religion(s) because they are such an integral part of our culture, and everyone else's.

Liberal ideology is certainly held in high regard at most universitys, and I'm assuming that's where your comments come from. This, however, is NOT a 'liberal' idea. Liberals embrace the strict separation of church and state, regardless of what church that is. Any real liberal would be just as pissed at this as they would be at something as assinine as lowering taxes to fix a budget deficit...

Anyway, any university that I've been involved with has been against paying for all religious ammenities equally. Now, if you go to a religiously subsidized university...

I go to the university of massachusetts....and they push for "diversity" as much as possible. I would not be suprised if this were implemented at my school.

Same at Penn State. Though the black caucas did get shut down when tried to ask for more money because black athletes contribute more to the school....

I think you'd be right if we weren't at war with terror, "evangelical" Bush wasn't in office, and if they were dealing with Christians. Let's face it, there are reasons behind why Yale takes on Al Qaeda, Harvard has Al Qaeda sympathizing professors, and why you won't see the foot baths outside Lowes speedway - not even privately funded ones.

I'm not saying ALL liberals are like this. But i'd put my money on the possibility of elitist liberal faculty at universities do something out of spite. That's all.
