I remind you of the jaw-dropping directive issued in August 2003 by then-San Diego Border Patrol Chief William Veal directing local Border Patrol agents to ignore suspected illegal aliens on city streets and at worksites in San Diego. The order was made in response to--you guessed it--complaints by the Mexican Consulate over Border Patrol arrests of illegal aliens seeking to obtain Mexican identification cards.

According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

I have a feeling the Wall Street Journal is going to get a lot of feedback about this unbelievably muddled piece by a Greenwich, Conn., neurosurgeon who ultimately sings the praises of an illegal alien with tuberculosis.

A social worker tracked down the illegal alien's friends and family. They all tested positive for TB and, get this, were all working "behind the scenes" in local restaurants. How appetizing. No word on whether the illegal workers' employers or local public health officials were informed.

After racking up $200,000 in hospital costs, the patient was released.

***update from Daily Bulletin: " Scott James, a former Tucson agent, resigned after eight years of service in February, citing a lack of support for agents by the Department of Homeland Security. He said that U.S. Border Patrol officials provided office space inside their headquarters to Mexican consulate officials, allowed the consulate to dictate the agents' activities, and gave the consulate information on ongoing investigations. Such courtesies were not extended to consulate offices of other countries, James said."***
