Freegans are people who are concerned so deeply with the social and ecological impact of economic over-consumption that they choose to buy and work as little as possible and, instead, to live directly off the massive waste created by our modern society. As funny and foreign as this idea may sound to you, these people are actually very much ahead of their time. Weather you want to believe it or not, oil WILL run out in the next 100-200 years, and when it does the world's societies will be forced to change towards the way these people live. They are not 'parasites' because they cause no harm to the 'being' they are living off of. They are much more like feeder fish or dung beetles, to give a couple examples.
Call them bums, or societal leeches...the truth is that they are helping us all out for absolutly no cost. They don't use welfare. They don't beg. So, even if the impact they make is not enough to save the planet, they are lightening the load humans have put on the earth a little bit for free. No negatives+small positives=positive thing overall in my book.
I'd bet they voted for Nader and not Gore anyway...

Oil will definiely run out at some point, but I'll wager a dollar that the result is catastrophic global conflict, not a radical move to what is essentially selflessness.

Well...the later would be better for everyone, though you're right that it's not likely. And after the conflict (because it won't last forever and I doubt it will end humanity), then the only option is simplicity.
All I'm saying is that these Freegans may be weird, and you may think they're crazy, but you really can't hold anything against them.

You're more likely to get gastroenteritis or food poisining eating from a salad bar than you are eating discarded food which is subsequently cooked, if you avoid meat and obviously rotten vegetables.
